When I reached my office, I poked my head through the partially closed door.

Empty.

I punched open the door, my eyes frantic as I searched for her. She was gone.

“Trish,” I called, moving down the hall.

There was no answer.

Patrick joined me by the front door. I ran upstairs, knowing full well she wouldn’t be there. And she wasn’t.

He shut the front door as I jogged back down the stairs. “She’s gone, man.”

She’d run from me.

Again.

And I had no way to reach her.

Again.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Trish

My hands shookas I pressed the call button on my phone.

Kane Zegas, my attorney, had called six times while I was with Andrew. It had been on silent. What if something had happened to Ella?

She is supposed to come first.

I should have been focused on her. On the trouble I was in. Yet I couldn’t stay away from Andrew. If I didn’t, I’d drag him into this hell. I already cared about him too much to do that.

“Trish. Are you somewhere you can talk?”

“Yes.” I didn’t care that I was on the sidewalk.

“Huxley’s been released.”

My legs gave way, and I collapsed right in the middle of the concrete. No one passing by even stopped to acknowledge me.

“I have no reason to believe he knows where you are, but I want you to be careful. I’ve contacted Daniel Elliott about this.” I heard what he said, but it was just noise.

My husband was free. He would find me.

“You’ll always be mine, Trish. Always. No man would take you anyway. You’re stained now. And you’re all mine to do with as I please.”

No. No. I couldn’t . . .What am I going to do?

“Trish? Are you there?”

“I’m here,” I whispered after a beat. “What do I do?”

Ella. How did I keep her safe from that monster? He’d . . . I didn’t know what he’d do to her. But I knew without a doubt what he’d do to me.

“Schedule a session with the therapist. Talk this out. And try not to worry. He doesn’t know what’s happened to you. We’ll do everything we can to make sure he doesn’t find you.”

“He will.” There was unmistakable confidence in my voice. I might not have known who my husband really was when I married him, but I did now.
