“Isn’t this on bond?”

She exchanged a glance with Zegas. “Don’t you want it to be permanent?”

“Why are you both avoiding my questions?” My pulse throbbed against my neck. No more surprises. I couldn’t handle it.

“Are you okay?” The gentleness in her tone caught me off guard.

I shifted in my seat. “Are you?”

“Want to come to the doctor’s appointment week after next?”

Panic wound through my gut. “Is something wrong?”

She smiled at me like I was silly. “Don’t you think if something were, I’d have had you out of there sooner?”

“You left me in there on purpose?” I asked incredulously.

Zegas rubbed his forehead. “Is this how all of your conversations go?” He groaned. “You’ve got me speaking in questions.”

Wicked giggled. I was in so much trouble.

A crowd was gatheredon the steps of the courthouse. Flashes popped. A low hum buzzed among the people. Off to the side, the entire Dixon clan stood, even Ella and Blake.

Marlow led me toward them, her fingers knotted in mine. Just before we reached them, I stopped her.

“Wicked, please tell me what’s happening.”

“I told you we’d get you out.” She tilted her head to the side. “Are you nervous? I thought you spoke to the cameras all the time.”

“Usually I know what I’m talking about.”

She touched my cheek. “You’ll know soon enough.”

“Did you do this?”

Her mouth wrinkled. “I wish I could take credit for it. Sometimes we have to have a little faith people will eventually do the right thing.”

“What—”

A slap on my shoulder interrupted my question. I turned to find Andrew with a half-apologetic, half-glad to see me look on his face.

“I, uh, I haven’t been a good friend to you.”

“Lucky I’ve been away for a few days then.” We did a bro handshake, and just like that, I’d forgiven him. Marlow’s mouth turned down as she watched us.

“I’m sorry, man. I knew, but I just—”

“It’s a shit situation all around.”

“Why have you never denied it?” Wicked blurted.

“People think what they’re going to no matter what I say. I know the truth. I shouldn’t have to go around defending myself.” Not to her. Out of everyone she should’ve believed me.

She nodded once, satisfied. “Especially not to your family.”

“They don’t listen to me anyway,” I muttered.

“I meant us.” She motioned to herself and then all the other Dixons, both honorary and in name.
