“Find out if you can.” I set a pot on the stove. She already knew, but I hated having to confirm the worst to Pepper.

“Any suspects?” I opened the fridge and gagged. “Don’t any of you know how to throw stuff away?”

I slammed the door and shuddered.

“Yo. We’ve been a little shorthanded around here,” Burke said in defense.

One man down was hard enough. Two? It would’ve been a struggle.

“Dinner is going to be late.”

I held my breath and threw anything that looked suspect in the trash. So basically I emptied the entire fridge.

“We ain’t been by the store either.”

That figured.

“Help me haul this garbage to the dumpster, and I’ll run to the market.”

He grabbed a trash bag in each hand. I followed him with a couple more.

“Shit, that stinks,” he said, as he heaved one into the dumpster behind the station. He caught my arm when we’d finished. “There’s a set of the same prints at every scene.”

“Is there a match?” And why was I just now hearing about this? Oh. I’d been holed up in a hospital for days.

He glanced around nervously. “Yeah. But I ain’t saying who yet.”

“Who is it?” If we knew—if we knew, I could confirm or rule out my father’s involvement.

He rapped me on the head with his knuckles. “Did you not hear what I said? I’m not saying anything until I’m sure.”

“You’ve got the prints,” I said incredulously.

“Shh.” He put his finger up to his lips and glared. “Keep your voice down, big mouth.”

“What’s the big deal if the guys hear?”

He grunted. “Just don’t say anything.”

“I wish you hadn’t told me.” I stalked back inside. “That’s like saying there’s a chocolate cake right there and I can’t have any.” I pointed to an invisible spot on the fire truck’s gleaming bumper.

“You’re good at pouting.”

“Burke, you gonna help sometime today?” Walsh yelled.

“If you jackasses would throw out your trash occasionally, I already would be,” he called back. “Between the three of you, it’s a wonder I have any hair left.”

“What did I do? You’re the one keeping secrets,” I said in a low voice.

He looked around again. “Fine, but if you breathe one word of this to anybody—”

“I wouldn’t.”

He knew that. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have kept me up-to-date with what Willa found.

“It’s—”

BRRRRRIIIIINNNNGGGG!!!!
