Something hit my legs.

I knelt and a familiar set of wild eyes met mine.

Oh shit.

Sadie.

Chapter Forty-One

Pepper

“Stay with me.”

I covered Miss Adeline’s nose and mouth with a sweatshirt to block the smoke. We’d been stuck in my bedroom for far too long. I didn’t know what to do.

The door was impossible to open. I’d raised the window, but I knew nothing about fires. There was something about oxygen. I couldn’t remember if it was good or bad for the flames.

Smoke billowed under the door.

My eyes burned.

My nose burned.

My lungs burned.

Ash and Muffy paced from one corner of my small room to the other. Nervous. Panicked.

And Miss Adeline could barely keep her head up.

The sirens had been a welcome sound, but the fire seemed to have escalated at too rapid a clip to stop it.

I was out of options. The door was jammed shut. How? Sadie . . . where was she? Was she hurt? The other dogs . . . locked downstairs. Oh God.

We’d been about to feed them and then suddenly everything had gone up in flames. But how?

They’ll find the dogs first.

Unless the fire started downstairs.

Oh no.

I couldn’t think like that.

Cough. Cough.

The sweatshirt wasn’t much better than nothing over Miss Adeline’s face.

Ash sat next to her but close enough that she was almost on top of her. We were next to the open window. The smoke pouring out into the night made it almost impossible to get fresh air.

I stuck my head out. “Up here!”

My voice sounded little more than a whisper, clogged from the smoke. There were two firemen fighting the blaze with a hose. I tried again and waved my arms.

Why don’t they see me?

A fireman burst out from the building with two dogs in his arms. He carried them over to a vehicle I couldn’t see.

Thank goodness. At least they’re safe.
