“I’m watching you, Son.”

I hesitated but didn’t turn around. That wasn’t news. He was the way he was, and I couldn’t change him.

I had to learn to live my way, his desires be damned.

“Well, that was . . . not the best.” Pepper let out a breath as soon as we were outside.

“Do you think it sounds like he was trying to protect me?” I asked as I helped her in the truck.

“As much as I hate to say it, yeah. But that makes no sense.” She lifted a shoulder and lowered it.

“I can’t hold on to my hate.” I put my forehead against hers.

“Good.”

I snapped up. “You don’t think I should?”

“No. I think we should love.” She cupped my cheeks. “You’re not the hateful type.”

I grinned. “I’m not, am I?”

“Nope.”

I gripped her thighs. “Thanks for doing this.”

She brushed her lips across mine. “Anytime.”

“Ready to go home?”

She beamed. “Let’s go home.”

Teague

“Didyour dog piss on my truck?”

Pepper grinned as Muffy put his leg down.

“We were washing it.” I held up the soapy washcloth. “You owed me, but somehow I ended up doing it.”

“Sounds fair to me.” She scooped up some suds from the bucket and flicked them in my face.

Muffy jumped to catch them and failed miserably.

“Why you little—”

I chased Pepper, and she grabbed the hose.

“Watch how you finish that sentence.” She aimed straight for my chest.

“Do it,” Miss Adeline called from a nearby chair. “Wet T-shirt contest.” She hooted, and I burst out laughing.

“New calendar proofs are in next week,” I said.

“Get me two. I need to brag at the deli.”

This was my life. Crazy chaos. Two women and a bunch of dogs that kept me entertained.
