All this support from people who weren’t my siblings meant a lot to me.

“I did.”

“Does Lincoln know?” Daniel reached in his pocket. Was he going to call my brother?

Another chime sounded from my hand. I didn’t bother to look to see who it was.

“I better take off.” I didn’t want to leave, but I’d pushed my father as much as I was willing to risk . . . for now.

Pepper pushed to her feet. The dogs followed her as she took a few steps toward me. I met her halfway and opened my arms. She came into them easily. Her warmth made the difficult hours ahead easier to face.

I kissed the top of her head.

She hugged me hard before she pulled back. “I’m holding you to that raincheck.”

“I’ll come by whenever I finish up.” Based on my pattern of behavior, I probably didn’t need to say that.

“Take Me Home” played. I let it go to voicemail, not ready to release Pepper yet. Especially when I was fairly certain it was my father. The song paused for only a second before it began again.

Reluctantly I dropped one arm and checked the caller ID.

Burke.

“Yo,” I answered, and Pepper smirked.

“Yo.” He didn’t seem to notice I’d picked up his term. “The barrels with them bodies at the park?”

I stiffened. Thinking about the fire at Pepper’s park was still hard. Those barrels made it more difficult.

“Yeah?”

He didn’t say anything for so long I thought we’d been disconnected.

“Burke?”

“They have a suspect.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Pepper

“Who is it?”

There was a hard edge to Teague’s voice usually only reserved for his father. Certainly not Logan Burke.

I dug my nails into his arm. Ash sat up. The room was still and quiet.

He grunted at whatever response he got. “Keep me posted.” Before I could ask what was going on, he touched my cheek. “They have a suspect in the park fire. Burke doesn’t know who yet, but maybe some form of justice will be done.”

Teague didn’t seem convinced though.

What justice could those people have? They died. There was no coming back from that.

The park might never be the same, but it could be rebuilt. A second chance was possible.

For the people, they’d never have that.

Anger and sorrow swirled through me. One sick act had destroyed so much.
