Yeah, I knew. Because I’d been helping him make the payments.

“He didn’t do it!” Ma threw a wooden spoon on the counter and pushed her way through the wall of sons out of the kitchen.

“I’ll go check on her,” Mike said.

A silence descended on the kitchen. We’d had a lot of good times in this very spot and a lot of bad ones too.

It didn’t look good for Joe, but we’d figure out a way to pull through as a family.

That was what we did.

“I talked to the inspector.” Bobby sat down at the table. “Joe’s in trouble.”

If I told anyone what he’d said to me the night we’d gone over to get some of his things, he’d be in even more trouble.

My phone rang, but I made no move to pull it from my pocket.

“Aren’t you gonna answer?” Aaron pointed at me. “It could be something about Joe.”

I stood and slipped it out.

“I’ll be back.” I held up the phone to my brothers.

It stopped ringing, but I called the number back as I tracked through the living room to the front door.

“I have to see you.” Beau sounded desperate as her voice barreled into my ear.

She rarely called.

Every one of my senses went on high alert. I closed the front door behind me and paced on the stoop.

“He touch you again?”

“No. Please, Cal. Where are you? I’ll meet you.”

This was different than the night she’d been hurt. Fear was in every syllable.

My family needed me, but so did Beau.

“I’ll come pick you up.”

“East 92nd and Park.”

The front door opened and Bobby stuck his head out. “That news about Joe?”

I shook my head. “I’ll be there soon.” I hung up and pocketed my phone again. “I gotta run. Call me if anything happens.”

“Cal, we’re in a crisis here.” He threw his hands up.

“I know, and I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I jogged to my truck and fired it up.

I’m coming, baby sister. I’m coming.
