But Beau, she wove some sort of spell on me that made it impossible for me to say no.

Or maybe I didn’t want to. Maybe this was my chance to get another fill of her, one that would hold me over another eleven years.

The sun peeked through the curtains, casting a sliver of light on her dark hair as she put on her shoes.

“You gonna buy me breakfast?”

I regretted the question. It was meant to rile her up but made it sound like I was using her for her money. Everyone at the station knew the Hollingsworths were stacked, but Teague was so down-to-earth it was easy to forget he wasn’t like the rest of us, struggling to get by.

Money had been a point of contention between Beau and me a long time ago. She wanted to do things I couldn’t afford, and I didn’t mean weekends in the Hamptons. Dinner, movies, bowling. She hadn’t seen it as a big deal to pay, but it was to me.

“If I could stand to spend any more time with you, breakfast would most certainly not be on the agenda,” she said without looking at me.

“Oh no?” I put a hand over my heart. “This is starting to feel a whole lot like you’re using me.”

I grinned, and she threw a pillow at me.

“Don’t act like you’re not getting anything out of this.” She pushed off the bed and grabbed her purse.

Yeah, I was getting something. And I wasn’t going to think about what it was.

I snagged her by the waist as she rounded the bed and pulled her between my legs. “Try not toneedme until Thursday. I’m on twenty-four.”

She shoved at my chest, but I didn’t let her go.

“I don’t need you.”

My grin widened. “Funny thing. I got the text that says you do.”

Her mouth rolled as she looked ready to spit fire. “Let me go.”

I tugged her closer. “Is that really what you want?”

What are you doing, Cal? The sooner she’s out of here, the better.

“What time Thursday?” she asked as if it pained her.

Why that question gave me satisfaction, I didn’t know. But I liked that she was already planning to have me again. Maybe she needed this as much as I did.

“Seven.”

“You have to be at work in an hour?” Her eyes rounded.

“P.M.,” I corrected. “And like you aren’t headed straight to the office.”

“I have to shower first,” she said coldly. As if she needed to get rid of all the evidence that I’d been inside her.

I released her so quickly, she swayed on her heels but didn’t fall. That dig bothered me more than I wanted to admit.

She didn’t react, not even a dirty look, and as the door closed behind her, that bothered me too.

I plowed a hand through my hair. Why was she in my bed?Is that what you call this? Because it sure as hell looks like a low rent motel to me.

I’d picked this place on purpose the first time, halfway in hopes that she’d take one look and run because it wasn’t up to her standards. Instead, she’d walked in, ripped my shirt over my head, and taken what she wanted like she’d never forgotten what made me crazy.

Not even ahey, what have you been doing for the past decade? She’d sent a message she only wanted one thing. And that was fine by me because that was all I had to give.

She went back to her world, and I stayed in mine.
