“You sure?”

“Yeah. I’m sure.”

I grabbed a blanket and pillow from the hall closet and handed it to him. “Make yourself at home.”

So maybe that wasn’t the best choice of words, considering he hated his home at the moment.

“Thanks.”

I closed my bedroom door and quickly shed my clothes before I collapsed on the bed. This was the day that kept on giving.

Somehow, I’d talked my brother off the ledge of torching his house, but I swore it was like someone else had taken over his body. An emotionless shell walking around in a daze.

I expected it wouldn’t be long until the cops showed up. Hopefully, it would be one of the boys we’d gone to school with, and he’d give Joe a break. They all knew what had happened and that Lee Stanis deserved every punch he got.

An image of Beau beneath me with those brown eyes on fire for me flashed across my brain. I wanted nothing more than to lose myself in her. Forget the shit day I’d had. Forget everything but how she felt wrapped around me.

She’d been a distraction that came along at just the right time. Exceptshewas becoming too much of a distraction.

Lately my first instinct, whether things were going right or wrong, was to text her. She didn’t expect conversation. Didn’t want it. Purely physical. That was how we worked best.

Yet, I wanted some of her snark. Her coldness. And part of me wanted that fight too. Was I a masochist?

I rolled over and punched my pillow. Joe was here. I needed to keep a watch on him, so I couldn’t sneak out. And I definitely couldn’t bring her here.

Maybe this thing with Joe was a sign. For all my big talk, I’d planned to see her tonight. To bring her here because I couldn’t pay for another night in a motel.

Having her in my space was a bad idea. The worst.

Somebody was looking out for me.

I closed my eyes.

Was Joe really going to torch his place? And what was Ma going to do when she found out he’d beaten Lee within an inch of his life?

Bzzz. Bzzz. Bzzz.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand.

“What happened?” My oldest brother’s worried voice barreled into my ear.

“He beat the shit out of Lee. I’ve got him.”

“Damn it,” Bobby muttered under his breath. “I’ll be there in a few.”

“No need.” I propped against the headboard. “He won’t say much anyway.”

“You should’ve brought him here.”

“You’ve got the kids and Michelle. I think it’s best if he’s away from a happy family environment right now.” The last thing Joe needed was a reminder of all the things hedidn’thave.

“Have you called Ma?”

“Are you crazy?” She’d find out soon enough, but I wasn’t going to be the one to tell her.

“I’ll handle it.”

Better him than me. Ma would be furious, especially if Joe went to jail.
