I brushed my lips across his.
Promises. I didn’t want them from just anyone. I wanted them from him. Because whether he realized it or not, I’d made one to him too.
He had my heart.
The most important thing I had to give. And it was his. Completely.
“Don’t start something I’ll finish right here,” he warned huskily as I rubbed my heel down the back of his thigh.
“WouldIdo something like that?” I touched my chest.
A corner of his mouth loosened. The storm clouds had parted in his eyes. “Yes.”
He brusquely kissed me. “Shit. There’s Burke. And Teague.”
Panic shot through me. I dove for the backseat.Please don’t let them see us.
I lay on the floorboard and pulled a jacket and a blanket over me.
Someday you have to tell Teague.
I knew that. But today was not that day.

Not because I was ashamed. If my father had found out about us, I’d have never seen Garrett again. And clearly Teague would’ve murdered him for touching me.

I reached out to Brutus without thought, petting his head. Cal had lied. And the twenty-something I’d once been had believed him.
It wasn’t him who never stopped thinking of me.
I glared at him as the ugly realization hit me.

“Just crash here.”
Tempting as it was, I shook my head. “Thanks for the offer, but I got a ton of stuff to do before my shift tomorrow.”
And I couldn’t risk spending the night with Beau only a room away. She’d been frigid since they’d arrived back with the new dogs. But there wasn’t a cold wind coming from her direction. She’d shut the door so there was nothing.
Like I was nothing.
“We really appreciate you looking out for our furry monsters.” Pepper tucked herself against Teague’s side.
“Glad to help,” I brushed off the gratitude. He’d have done the same for me if I’d asked.
“I know you’re busy, but Copper seems to feel safe around you.” Pepper worried her lip. “Could you come by? Just when you have time. It might help her adjust more quickly.”
