Another sedan with blacked-out windows.

“I’m sorry,” Beau said when we passed by Ben’s.

I squeezed her fingers.

“I think I’m so used to being followed, it just doesn’t register.” She shook her head. “That’s crazy.”

“He’scrazy,” I corrected. “Why does he do this to you?”

“I-I don’t know. But I’m such a fool. I thought I’d learned to zig and zag enough to shake him. But I’m wrong.” She rolled her chain between her fingers.

“Nobody is going to follow my wife around,” I growled.

My wife.

I was getting way too comfortable with that term.

“How are you going to stop him?” she asked incredulously.

I turned onto Aaron’s street. “Haven’t figured that out yet.”

My brother had texted he was at Ma’s already, but there was another black sedan parked near his place.

Joe’s house—or what was left of it—was a couple blocks away. Might as well see what was happening over there.

“I talked to Zegas while you had a minute alone with Joe.”

I cut my eyes to her.

“I’ll pay his fees and post bail. It’s the least I can do, considering what you’ve given up for me,” she said.

“No.”

“It’s already done.”

I stomped on the brake at a yellow light.

“Then undo it.”

She wasn’t paying my way. I didn’t want her money.

“This is the gas station all over again,” she muttered.

“What are you talking about?”

“I tried to give you twenty bucks for gas and you went all broody.”

Because it wasn’t her place to take care of me. I was the one responsible. My father had provided for our family. Ma had never had to work a day in her life. And I wasn’t going to be any different.

Not that I’d stop Beau from working.

I wanted her to have and do everything she wanted. Hadn’t I already proven that? But her money was off-limits. Period.

“And then you dove for the backseat when your brother pulled up.” It was a low blow, but that had stung.

Me and my old truck and my five bucks for gas weren’t good enough.

“I was wrong,” she said quietly. “I realized that at your mom’s tonight. We never should’ve hidden anything. I should’ve stood up to my father back then. My brothers too. Things would’ve turned out different.”
