It had been a long, bumpy road to this point. Would I have truly appreciated Cal if we’d stayed together? I’d lived so much life since then. Learned so much about myself, about what I wanted. What I needed.

A few weeks ago, marriage hadn’t been on that list.

Now, I clung to it with both hands.

If this isn’t what he wants, will you let him go?

I couldn’t think about that now. There were so many other hurdles to jump, and we’d take them one at a time.

When his building came into view, the relief was short-lived. A black sedan was parked out front. Cal tensed when he caught sight of it too.

“What’s it gonna take to end this?”

I didn’t move as he parked and turned off the truck. We sat in silence a moment.

“I have no idea.”

He flicked his chin at me. “Then we’ll just ride it out until it’s over.”

He was talking about my father, but did he also mean us? I was tired of guessing. Tired of having to tiptoe around.

I shoved out of the truck and marched over to the sedan. I tapped on the window not so gently. When it didn’t roll down, I knocked harder.

The hum was short. A small gap revealed blue eyes and nothing more.

“Get out of here, or I’m calling the police for stalking me.”

“It’s not illegal to park on the street,” he said coolly.

“It is if you’re following someone.”

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

The window rolled up when I felt Cal at my back.

“Have it your way.” I pulled out my phone. “Do you know the number to the police station?”

“I’ve got some buddies who can come down.”

Cal murmured into his phone for a minute, and we went upstairs to the apartment.

He locked the door and pulled the curtain back on the front window. The sedan pulled away. Cal fired off a text to his police friends, I assumed to tell them the threat was gone.

“He could’ve had a gun.” Cal tossed his phone on the coffee table.

“I’ve had enough.”

I kicked off my shoes. They landed near the front door with a thud.

Cal watched them as if he’d never seen anything like it. Then I plopped on the couch and propped my feet on the coffee table.

“When is your next day off?” I asked.

“Day after tomorrow.” He was still rooted in front of the TV, looking torn between joining me and running down the hall.

I wiggled my toes. The polish was chipped on my big toe, and I couldn’t find it in me to care.

“I had some time to think about how to make this situation into something positive.” I leaned my head back. “I thought I wanted to humiliate my father, but that’s petty and ridiculous.”
