And it wasn’t fair to my wife.

She hadn’t asked me for anything, but it wasn’t just me to think about anymore.

“I’ll get help.” He rubbed his hands over his thighs.

“You’re coming home where I can watch you properly,” Ma said, leaving no room for argument.

“How much you owe?” Bobby asked, shoving Aaron’s shoulder.

“Two grand,” he said quietly.

“You told me three hundred,” I said, voice rising.

“I got paid today, so I had some of it.”

Mike smacked the back of his head. “You done being stupid?”

Behind the question was a boatload of worry we all felt. This wasn’t a faucet that could be turned off. It was a long road that would be full of setbacks and starting over.

But we’d all be on it together.

“I’ll try.”

Ben smacked him too. “We love you, you dipshit.” He grabbed him in a headlock from behind and rubbed his head.

“Watch your mouth,” Ma said.

“Can I call him a dumbass?”

I rolled my eyes at Ben.

“Not in this house.” Ma pointed. “Or outside of it.”

She knew my smart aleck brother too well.

“I’m sorry,” Aaron said quietly.

“We all make mistakes, baby. You just need your family to help you through them.” Ma stood and pulled him out of his seat for a hug.

He clung to her like he was a kid instead of a grown man. But sometimes we just needed our ma.

Beau squeezed my thigh.

I kissed the side of her head.

“So, when you gonna introduce us to our newfamily?” Bobby asked, pointing his head at Beau.

There hadn’t been time for any of that before Aaron arrived.

I cleared my throat. “This is Beau.”

“What are you doing with an idiot like him?” Ben asked, grinning.

“She’s way out of your league,” Mike chimed in.

“Your wife is out of your league too,” Michelle chimed in, linking arms with my brother. “Just like I’m out of Bobby’s.” She turned her attention to Beau. “Welcome to the jungle. I’m Michelle. This big lug’s wife.” She elbowed Bobby.

Beau looked a little overwhelmed but managed to find her voice. “Nice to meet you, Michelle. All of you really.”
