“The neighbor has one of those video doorbells. The footage shows the car rolling up and a few minutes later the house is in flames. We confirmed it’s the same license plate.”

“Then the police should easily be able to solve this.” Cal let out a frustrated breath.

“They haven’t done anything more than ask around if anybody saw anything. And the neighbor doesn’t want to come forward now that they know there is definitive evidence. They want to stay out of it.” He lifted a shoulder and lowered it. “Now you have to decide how much shit you want to stir up. I’m game if you are.”

“Why? I want to know why the hell he torched my brother’s house.” Cal paced in front of the bench.

“That’s something only Daddy dearest knows.”

“Cal, he out yet?” Bobby burst into the station.

Four other Calhoun brothers plus Mrs. Calhoun were right behind him.

“Not yet.”

Cal’s mother walked straight up to Zegas and cupped his face. “Are you responsible for my boy being freed?”

The lawyer looked a little scared. I loved that woman. She wasn’t afraid of anybody, and she’d caught Kane Zegas completely off guard.

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” he asked hesitantly.

“A very good thing.”

“Then yep, I’m the guy,” he said smugly.

She kissed both of his cheeks. “You’ll come eat once we get Joe.”

“I . . . would love to come eat.”

I wasn’t sure if it was her threatening glare or the thought of going home to his wife that made him agree.

Then she kissed both of my cheeks. “That ring looks perfect on your finger.” She winked.

“Thank you, Mrs. Calhoun. Garrett told me you saved it for him.”

She shook my shoulders. “No more of this Mrs. Calhoun business. You’ll call me Ma like the rest of the family.”

A warmth spread through me.Ma.

I didn’t want to replace my mother, but I could have more than one, couldn’t I? One who looked out for me from above and one who was here?

“Okay,Ma.”

I hugged her hard.

She returned the embrace then held me at arm’s length. “My gracious, child. What happened?” Lines formed around her eyes as she studied my forehead.

“May we talk about it later?” I’d thought about it enough for one day and was emotionally drained.

“Did my baby boy take care of this?” she asked sternly.

“He did.”

“Then we can talk about it later.”

A loud click sounded.

We all looked toward the reception area.
