He looked around the modern suite that was the size of his apartment while at university and shrugged. “The level of security we need comes with its own standard of luxury.”

“Does it?” Her chocolate gaze mocked him.

“Tease me at your peril, lady.”

“Oh, I am not one of those. I’m just a garden variety woman and happy to be so.”

He stepped right into her personal space but did not reach out to touch her as he was itching to do. “I would never classify you as garden variety anything.”

“Compliments? Already?”

“Compliments always.” Jenna Beals was an amazing woman, and he’d always thought so.

She was a good friend to Nataliya, as close as any sister. There was no way that Jenna was the knowing source of the information leaks. Which left two possibilities: she was confiding in the wrong person, or she was being spied on somehow.

Tonight his security detail would be searching her home for listening devices while she was with him at his hotel. He would need to search her handbag.

It was highly unlikely her phone had been compromised. Guests who did not submit to the mobile phone security protocols at the palace had their devices locked in a secure vault that blocked all signals for the duration of their stay.

To his knowledge, Jenna had never refused to have her phones upgraded with the latest security software and checked on every visit to the palace.

“You’ve got a strange look on your face.”

He gave himself a mental shake. “Do I? Are you sure it’s not just the look of a man who wants to kiss you?”

Which he did. Even without his brother’s request, Dimitri would have come looking for Jenna. His desire for her only grew as the years went by.

He’d never acted on it when they were both visiting the palace. It hadn’t felt right, but then, he’d never taken a lover to the palace, much less taken one while staying there from among the guests.

Too much opportunity for scandal, and really? His family had already had enough of that. He and his brothers had each brought their own kind of notoriety to the royal house, and not in a good way.

Dimitri had no intention of featuring in the scandal rags again if he could help it.

“You’re doing it again,” Jenna said.

“What?”

“Thinking.”

“How can you tell?” He was genuinely curious. Controlling his emotions and expressions had been taught to Dimitri from the cradle.

“You get this look.”

“What look?”

She sighed in exasperation. “The one you just had on your face.”

“I do not have it now?”

“No. Now you look irritated.”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“I am irritated.” And she could tell. Unbelievable.

He had better control than that.
