He made an impatient gesture with his hand. “As much as it bothers me that someone has used you to get information on my family and company, I’m sure it has occurred to you that other areas of your life have been exposed as well.”

“Don’t pretend you care.” She’d assumed he hadn’t even considered that aspect.

“I do care,milaya.”

“Enough with the Russian endearments.” More than enough. She could not hear that word one more time without bursting into tears, and she had no idea why, but she wasn’t going to pretend to herself she had a better hold on her emotions than she did. “It’s not as cute as you seem to think it is.”

“I am not trying to becute.”

“At this point, I cannot figure out what you are trying to be.”

Another knock sounded on her door. This one a lot quieter, and Jenna had to shake her head that she’d thought the earlier confident and demanding one had been anyone other than Dima.

She went to get up to answer, but the prince beat her to it, opening the door and taking possession of her bag with minimal words.

“I can answer my own door,” she pointed out.

He gave her a look that questioned why she felt the need to point that out. “Have I implied otherwise?”

“Never mind. Dima, I’m tired, and now my things are here. I want to go to bed.”

“Yes, of course.” But he made no move to relinquish her bag. “I do not want to leave you alone.”

“I spend most nights alone.”

“Tonight is not most nights.”

No, it had been the best sex of her life followed by some awful news. Not that it competed with the worst news of her life, but learning Dima had used sex with her for his own ends and that she’d been spied on hurt all around.

She just wanted time to herself to lick her wounds, but the dense man seemed to think she needed company more.Hiscompany.

He put her suitcase down in the bedroom, coming back out immediately, his expression unhappy. Not something he would be happy to learn he expressed. He was so proud of his ability to hide his emotions.

All the princes were.

It was a thing.

A weird, royal thing.

She sat in silence, waiting for him to leave.

He stopped just before he reached the door and turned to face her again, his expression intent. “Sex between us was inevitable.”

In that moment, she would have given anything to deny those words, but she couldn’t. “Maybe, but it didn’t have to happen tonight.”

He inclined his head, like she’d made a point. “I am used to doing what I think is best.”

“Arrogant.”

“Probably.”

“Good night, Your Highness.”

He winced, as he’d done every time she used the title. She would figure out what that meant later, after she’d gotten some sleep. Maybe.

“Good night, Jenna. I will see you tomorrow.”

“No.”
