“That is not something to be proud of.”

“Did I say I was proud of it?”

“Well, if you’re not, maybe you should consider changing that habit.”

“Perhaps I should. We can talk about it over breakfast.”

“I’m already at work.”

“You do not need to stay there.”

“Yes, I do.”

“I will send over the team to do a thorough search of your office while we discuss what they found in your apartment last night.”

“We can have that discussion over the phone.”

“Please, Jenna, just meet me for breakfast.”

“Are you begging me?” she asked with more mockery than she meant to, but the fact that he’d started that sentence with a sincere-soundingpleasewas throwing her for a loop. “Why is this so important to you?”

“I’ll tell you over breakfast.”

“You assume I want to know enough to be swayed by that.”

“You may not have the cutthroat nature of some journalists, but you have always had the professional curiosity of one.”

“This is hardly a professional situation.”

“Agreed, though it impacts your work, as it does mine.”

He was right. As much as she hated admitting it. Her situation was impacting his work, and his family.

Though Jenna had not shared any secrets out of turn, sensitive information had leaked through her.

“Fine. Where do you want to meet?”

“I will be at your building in a few minutes to pick you up.”

She sighed, not at all surprised that he was already on the way. If she had refused breakfast, the irritating man would have simply shown up in her office.

Like he had the day before.

“Send your team up. I’ll let them in, and then I will come down.” She didn’t wait for his agreement before hanging up.

Dimitri waited impatiently for Jenna.

He had miscalculated about her leaving the hotel, but that wasn’t the only miscalculation he’d made. He’d been so sure that once he told her what was going on, she would understand the need to search her apartment and handbag.

Instead, she’d assumed he’d instigated sex as a maneuver of expediency and was hurt that his family had doubted her at all.

He’d spent more time thinking about her reaction than sleeping the night before and had come to some conclusions. The first was that he should have told her what was going on before having sex with her.

The second was that his brother, Kon, could not seriously have doubted Jenna’s innocence. Which raised the question, why had Kon implied that he did?

The passenger door opened, interrupting his thoughts. “We’ve only got an hour. I called my boss and gave her a heads-up about what is going on. She’s meeting me to discuss this situation further when I get back.”

Dimitri bit back a curse. “Why did you do that?”
