“We can arrange for a palace-approved therapist for you to talk to,” Dima said, sounding like he really thought that was some kind of solution.

“How about you arrange a way to tell my best friend that I can’t be in her life anymore?”

“No, that’s not—”

“Your choice.” She glared at Dima, Jenna’s eyes burning with tears, her heart cracking at the thought of losing Nataliya. “I won’t put other people in my life at risk because I want to keep a dear person in my life.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“Honestly? I don’t know, but right now, I do know I don’t want you in my office. Can you respect that, at least, Your Highness?”

“Jenna, I respect you.”

The look she gave him let him know how much she believed that.

His frown of consternation said he got the message. “Your boss is just as committed to not pressing charges.”

Like that mattered. It wasn’t her boss in here pressing the advantage and giving Jenna a gag order.

“I didn’t have sex with my boss last night. She’s never claimed I was part of her family.” She spoked slowly, so he did not miss a single word. “She didn’t pretend to be my friend.”

“It is no pretense. Do you think I would press charges if it had been me who was being spied on?” he asked. “Or one of my brothers?”

“Does it matter? It wasn’t you. It was me, and I want Skylar to go to jail.”

“You’re not a vengeful person.”

Justice was not vengeance, but if he couldn’t see that, Jenna saying so wasn’t going to open his eyes.

A knock sounded at the door.

Jenna made no move to answer it. Doing so would require her walking right by Dima, and she wasn’t doing that.

After a second knock, the prince turned around and opened the door. His security guy said something in a low tone.

Dima nodded and replied in the same quiet tone, then turned back to her. “I have to leave.”

Since that was what she’d been trying to get him to do for the last several minutes, Jenna did not bother to reply.

“There’s a problem with the deal I’m working for Mirrus Global,” he offered anyway.

“Okay.”

“Can I pick you up for dinner?”

She didn’t even ask herself what planet he lived on. He’d established it wasn’t in her orbit. “No.”

“Jenna, we have to talk.”

“No.”

“Yes.” Then he left.

Jenna took a deep breath and then let it out. Everything just felt too heavy to hold right now.

So she did what she always did when emotion got too heavy. She focused on something else.

Back when her brother had been dying, she’d gotten straight A’s and been named player of the year on her soccer team.
