“Pack for what?”

“I’m going on vacation.”

“Where?”

“Not sure yet, but someplace sunny.”

“You don’t know where you are going?” he asked like the idea was beyond comprehension.

“No.”

“But you are leaving tomorrow?” The disbelief in his voice came across loud and clear over their connection.

“Yes.”

He was silent for a full five seconds. “Is that a good idea?” he asked, almost tentatively.

Imagine, Prince Dimitri of the House of Merikov tentative.

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

“Perhaps you are reacting to what happened.” He said the words slowly and carefully, like they were nitroglycerin he didn’t want to detonate.

“I’m definitely reacting to it.” And she had no trouble admitting that. “I want to get away, to enjoy some stress-free days on a beach somewhere.”

And to think through what she should do going into the future, away from everything familiar.

“And you do not know where?” He was sounding almost panicked.

“Why does that bother you so much? Normal people go on spur-of-the-moment vacations all the time. That’s why there’s last-minute deals, for people like me.”

She started sifting through the brochures and stopped at the one for Abu Dhabi. As funny as it might sound, she’d always wanted to go, ever since reading theGarfieldcomics as a child. The big orange cat was always threatening to ship Opie there.

As an adult, she’d learned it was the capital of the UAE, and that had only made it seem more intriguing and a place she wanted to go.

Jenna loved traveling, but her trips were usually dictated by work. This time, she was going on vacation, and she could go anywhere she liked.

“I’ve got to go, Dima. I need to get my trip booked.”

After a quick search, she’d discovered she didn’t need a visa to travel the UAE as long as her passport was current, which it was.

“You aren’t seriously booking a trip today that you plan to leave on tomorrow?” There was that odd near-panicked tone in the princely voice again.

“Well, yes.” Or perhaps the next day, but she was really hoping for tomorrow.

“What if it is a scam?”

“I’m not booking on some random website. I’ll use my usual links. You really need to get over this travel paranoia.”

“I am not paranoid about travel,” he said with stiff dignity.

“I’m glad to hear it. I was getting worried.”

He made a strange sound, like he was choking, trying to talk and growling at the same time.

She laughed. She kind of liked eliciting that sound from the urbane prince.

“Where are you hoping to go?” he asked.
