“She let you do that?”

“Rather than face prison? Yes.”

“But you wouldn’t have pressed charges.”

“She could not be sure of that, could she? You did a good job convincing her you were willing to do just that, come what may.”

“You usedmeas a threat?” Jenna felt a certain amount of satisfaction at that.

“Yes. Skylar also signed a confession admitting to planting the listening devices and the corporate espionage which she believes will be given to the DA if she is caught doing the same thing again.”

“She could move to another state, change her name.”

“She could, but she’s on our radar, and she knows it.”

“I...” Jenna wasn’t sure exactly how she felt about all of that. “That helps.”

“Good.”

“But it doesn’t change the fact that I couldn’t do what I thought was right.”

“Life is filled with compromise, and sometimes you must trust others to make sure your priorities are taken care of.”

“Like you ever do that,” she scoffed.

“You would be surprised at how often I’ve been forced to do that very thing.” The look he gave her was all sober sincerity.

Jenna sighed. “I forget that you have to compromise too. Nataliya has had to often enough.”

“Yes. You do not think she wanted to share the tragedy of her miscarriage with the world, do you?”

“No, I know she didn’t.”

And yet, even if the news hadn’t been leaked early, it would have been shared. Because Nataliya’s life could never be entirely private. No matter how much more comfortable that might be for the Queen of Mirrus.

He leaned back in his chair, his attention fully on Jenna, as it had been since his arrival. “So, Abu Dhabi.”

She pushed her plate away and returned that attention. “You really want to go with me to the UAE?” Had he ever taken a vacation that she knew of?

Jenna couldn’t remember one if he had.

“I prefer you go with me.” He gave her a charming smile. “On my plane, and stay at our property there.”

“You have a house in the UAE?”

“It is a condominium in an exclusive community, but yes, we have properties in most major markets.”

“And it’s empty right now?”

“Unless one of us is using it, the place is always empty. Allowing others to use it would be a security issue.”

“That seems like a waste, doesn’t it?” Even as she asked, she realized how little she cared.

She was just making conversation to give her brain a chance to process everything. The fact he’d neutralized Skylar, maybe not with the transparency Jenna would have preferred, but he’d done it all the same.

The fact he wanted sex again with her enough to go on a last-minute tripwithher to make that happen.

Overkill?
