I drop into my chair and see Saint through the glass. Dumping the pill bottle into the drawer, I stand. “Time to go?” I force a smile, running my hand through my hair. “I got her stable. Now it’s going to be about pain management and hoping that she regains consciousness. Without the proper scans, I can only guess at the internal damage to the brain and ocular cavity. She may lose the eye.”

“It’s better than her life. We can set her up in her apartment. This way, she’s close but not in the clubhouse.”

“That would be good for her. Sully was trying to wrangle people in last I checked. He’s a good egg.”

“Sully helped mold me, I guess you could say. After I lost the man I had always known as dad, he was the one I turned to. He helped me see how life could be. Kept my mother off my back even when I ended up in juvie for a stint.”

My eyes avert. “You and I have more in common than you realize. I may not have gotten locked up, but I should have.” I sigh. “My parents were, well, not exactly upstanding citizens.”

“How bad are we talking? Is it something we should be keeping an eye on?”

“Honestly? I don’t know anymore. My dad died last year, which is why Tobey is finally transitioning, and my mother’s whereabouts are unknown.” I walk over to him. “I was supposed to be a princess. Fuze is Japanese. I am a literal fusion of two fucked up criminal backgrounds. I got out of my house as soon as I could because they wanted me either pushing, doping athletes, or running AKs over the border.”

He runs a hand down his face. “Fuck. I need you to promise whatever we talk about stays with us, and you won't run even if you hear something you may not like.”

“Same,” I whisper.

“I swear it, and if you haven't figured it out yet, I protect what's mine. First, you have to admit a princess, and a Saint is pretty fucking fitting. Second, I may know how to get in touch with your mother.”

I shake my head almost violently. “No. She’s worse than my father ever was. When he did the things he did, she stood by and let it happen. She let him beat my brother senselessly. I think she may have even encouraged it. Tobey talks to her, but I refuse. I don’t want her apologies. I want her dead and buried like the piece of shit she is.” I pause. “I’m sorry that was inappropriate.”

“No, I get it. For the past few months since Ciara came into my life, she's been different. Until my little girl, she was a doting mother for my entire life. I didn't understand how weird the relationship was until I held Ciara against me. Now don't get me wrong, I will protect her against anyone and anything, but I won't stop her from living her life. I tried a lot of shit in my life, and some of it I enjoyed while other times not so much. Seeing her like she was on that table gutted me because she's all I have left.”

“That may have been true a few months ago, but now you have Ciara and me.”
