“Saint,” Sully calls my attention. “Mitchem, it’s been a long night care to state your business so Saint can get back to his family.”

“We’d like the name of the place you found Missus Westmoreland and your timeline for the last forty-eight hours.” He smirks, though he looks tired compared to the typical times he harasses my ass.

“Monroe and Drysten found her at Chester’s. As for my last forty-eight hours. I’ve been with the Doc and my daughter. We’ve all been here. Monroe and Drysten went out long enough to find my mom. Then they called, and we meet them at Doc's office.”

“Can anyone corroborate that besides your family?”

“I’d say the Dasher that delivered dinner to our little space.” My head spins as I see the Doc. When did she arrive? No one said anything. She’s in clean scrubs and looks freshly showered. Her hand wraps over my shoulder and squeezes firmly, giving me a nod. “If you have any more questions, you can feel free to call Josh Tompkins, my attorney. I’m sure he’d love to hear all about you harassing a traumatized and anxious family whose matriarch was nearly murdered. I mean, victim shaming is a firable offense these days, isn’t it?” She flips a business card toward him with just two fingers. You know that way they do it in the movies, all slick and shit? Yeah, like that, but way—hotter.

“I—well.” Mitchum looks at his fucking shoes! “Miss Fuze, I just needed to be sure what you told the officer at the hospital was on the level.”

She kisses my cheek. “Officer, I have had a long couple of days. Now, unless you have anything to actually connect us to anything other than worry and strife, let us be. As you can see, we are not going anywhere.”

He nods again, taking off his hat and twisting it in his hands. He doesn’t dare look up. “Have a good night.”

We watch him leave. As the gates close, I turn, lifting my woman by the ass so I can plant a kiss on her. “If I wasn’t so fucking worried, I’d have you bent over in seconds. Fuck. Nobody called me.”

“I told them not to. I wanted the element of surprise with the cop. Gotta keep them off their balance. At least that was what my sperm donor used to say. Momma was always good to have an alibi in her pocket. I reminded my Dasher that I always take care of him, and he seems to remember being here four times in the last three days, to be precise.” She hugs me and kisses me. “I was able to save your mom’s eye.”

“How is she? I would have stayed, but I’d have climbed the walls, and no sense in keeping Ciara there.”

“She’s stable and very, very, high. She isn’t going to really be able to talk for a while, and food is going to be all liquid for at least a couple of weeks. Her brain activity is good, but we won’t know if there is any cognitive damage until we can taper the meds. For now, she’s in good hands… Mine.”

“Fuck, I love you, Doc.”

“I need you more than I have just about anybody. I will never let anyone fuck with you guys. You may not know it, but I’m sorta a big deal.” She smiles and bites her lip as I press into her. I don’t have to say what I am thinking. She can certainly feel it. “I need you to meet someone before this goes any deeper.” The way she says that has the hairs on the back of my neck sailing sky high.
