Cliff

“Hello?”

“Cliff, what the fuck did you get me into?”

“Kris? What’s going on?” I ask, confused as he keeps running his mouth.

“Her heart? Did you fucking know?” He snarls.

“Who? What?” I’m so confused.

“That girl—Nikki, she has Claudette’s heart.”

“You mean that figuratively, right?” Wiping my hand down my face, I check the incoming text on my phone.

NikkiB— Call me right now! I’m freaking out!

“Kris, calm the hell down. I had no idea I—” My phone starts beeping. “Fuck hold on.”

“Don’t put me on—”

I hit the accept button seeing Nikki’s name.

“WHAT THE FUCK? Why didn’t you fucking tell me? Damn you, Pierce!”

Oh, for fuck’s sake. Holding the phone a foot from my head, I sigh. “What is your problem?” I have a feeling I already know, but fuck all if I’m telling either of them I got the other on the line. Dumb, yup, playing dumb.

“Don’t act like you have no clue. I have his sister’s heart? Why the fuck didn’t you tell me?

“Nic mouth!” I can hear Bobby in the background.

“You shush. Pierce, I don’t think I can do this.”

“J—Just hang on a sec.” Fucking phone dings, that asshole hung up. I switch over. “Kris, just—”

“You hung up on me, asshole! Damnit, Cliff, I can’t do this shit. She’s her age too. I mean, what the—how do I look at her and not see Claudette?”

“You can’t think like that. Look, I need the Shit—kicker room tonight.” The horrible tongue—in—cheek name was for the space just outside Curb Stomp, the buffet and bar Kris owns.”

“Why? And don’t change the subject.”

“Just shut up and let them know you got a party of one fifty coming out at eight-thirty. It’s for Nikki’s birthday, so just suck it up.” I switch back over and can still hear her hyperventilating. “Nikki?”

“This birthday really blows. I’m just going to go shower and climb in bed. Maybe if I can go to sleep, I can imagine it never happened.”

“You can’t do that! I just got us the rez at Curb Stomp. The Shit Kicker Room is the VIP section, a full—service buffet, open bars, and your friends are on their way.”

“From Cali? Have you lost your mind? I don’t want to celebrate. I’m seriously trying to deal with my headspace from this afternoon.”

“Nothing to be done. Makeup artists will be there in about half an hour. See you later!” I hang up, now to find her a makeup artist and let the idiot friends of hers know just where to find the party. I have a few things up my sleeve, but they are gonna have to wait for that.
