Nicolette

“Look, there’s no way around the whistleblower title. It’s what happens when you go against a corporation and tell the damn truth. What happened at Starling is atrocious, and while your words are paramount, we need Kris to give his side of things. I’d ask him, but this is your baby, your idea, and frankly, he never listens to me anyhow. Now The Morning Show and The Late Show both want interviews, but they want to see both of you. Only you can make that happen.” Michelle, the publicist at Vagrant and my go-between with the publishing house is straightforward and doesn’t mince her words. I have to respect it even if I dont like it.

“So we send in the pregnant woman to approach the grumbly bear.”

“He’ll be more receptive to the momma bear, than the chatty cat up the road. Look, I know this sounds like a lot of pressure, but you’ve basically saved not only Kris but this entire company. We have a leaky valve, but since you’ve come on there are artists that are interested in collabs, because of those bathroom TikToks you keep doing. People love you- not just Nikki B. They want to see what happens next.” Michelle clears her throat. “Just consider talking to him I-” She stops. “Hang on a second?”

She puts me on hold just as Kris comes back onto the boat with Bowzer. This pup is getting so damn big. “Hey, Tink, what did Michelle say?”

“We’re still talking actually, well once she gets me off hold. I think we need to go back to the cabin. He’s getting too big for this boat.”

He runs his hand through his hair, “I’ve been thinking about that too. I think that I am going to have to utilize the protection details, if we moore at the house, they can stay here on the boat and we can have our space back. But it means everywhere we go we will have at least two shadows. Can you handle that?”

I snort, “Only two? Do you know how many Pierce and dad had on me at any given time?” I shrug “If it keeps us and our babies safe, I think that’s all that really matters don’t you?”

“I know Cat will appreciate it, he keeps staring off at the mainland with such longing I’m ready to see if he’ll walk on a damn leash.” Kris chuckles just as I hear Michelle cut back into the line.

“Nicolette?”

“Yeah, I’m here.”

“Is Kris with you? Can you put me on speaker if it’s private enough?”

“Yeah, it’s just us and the animals. One second.” I put the phone down and hit the speaker button. “He can hear you,” I say as I look at Kris.

“Alright, so as per Kris’ instruction we have been digging around, trying to find the source of the bastard that has caused all the grief. Kris, you were right. It is Andre Patrick Oniel. The photographer who blew London out of the water. We thought he was gone after they fired him, but it seems he’s been low-key stalking for years. We just didn’t notice the damn bottomfeeder.”

“Fucker, I knew it,” Kris growls.

I sigh, “So the only thing we can do is talk before he can, right?”

“That would be my suggestion, stay ahead and give him nothing he can use against you. If it’s in the open then he’s toast. Kris do you want us to contact the Tennessee State Patrol, to keep an eye out?”

“Yeah, and call Bernard, we are going to need a silent mode detail from now on. We are going back to the cabin, the boat is not fit for pregnancy or cats.”

Michelle laughs. “I’ll make the arrangements.”

“I’ll do what we spoke about as well.” Hitting the end button, I look at Kris. How in the hell am I supposed to breach this topic? “Does this mean I get to sleep on a bed that isn’t moving tonight?”

“Oh, I’m sure it will move plenty.” He waggles his brows at me.

"Get over yourself! We need to talk."

Kris sits with a nod. “Okay, what’s up?” He seems more relaxed than he has in a while. I’m sure what we’re about to talk about is going to change that.

“So you know I sent the book I was writing to the editor, right?”

“Yeah? How did that go? I know Michelle is running point for you and Erica was going to check out the contracts when they make an offer.” He sits back as Cat hops into his lap looking for attention. Which he of course gives, diverting his attention.

“They uh, they need more but not so much from me.”

He rotates his hand, “Elaborate.”

I sigh. “I know I haven’t let you read it, maybe if you do you will understand…”
