“Yeah, I’m doing great,” I say, ignoring her question. “I’ve never felt safer. Mr. Corvi doesn’t waste any expenses on security.”

“Corvi? As in,Victor Corvi? How the hell did you get nabbed by him? I thought it was some random kidnappers! Fuck. You have to get out of there.”

No shit, Vanessa. “Yeah, I was thinking that too. It really has been too long since I saw Uncle Al, but with his health issues… Anyway, I have to go. This house keeps a strict schedule. You’d think I was in prison! Love you, hope to see you soon!”

I hang up before Vanessa can say anything else. I hand the phone back to Anabel. “Thank you, I really appreciate it.”

She gives me a strange look, and I don’t blame her. It was a strange conversation. At least Vanessa had the good sense not to try to call me back. They can use the number to track at least one person down, and while I feel a little bad Anabel might be caught in the crossfire…

I don’t have any other options.

“Of course,” Anabel says. “Have a good day, ma’am.” She puts the phone back in her pocket and pushes her cart out the door.

The lock clicks behind her.

Lucia

Ahand on my breast wakes me, and I open my eyes to see Saint standing in front of me. He looks… strange. Not like his usual self, but like something is bothering him. I don’t know why I care, except that he’s been the nicest to me.

Before I can say anything, though, I notice that Angelo is also in the room.

And Victor.

My heart drops.

I’m awake in an instant, pulling the covers closer to my body in an instinctive gesture to protect myself with the only thing available to me.

Angelo rips the sheet and blankets off of me, throwing them onto the floor and out of my reach. As I scramble to figure out what to do, he grabs me, shoving me down on the floor in front of him. I end up sitting down, half-stunned.

“Getting a bit full of yourself again, aren’t you,Princess?” Angelo sneers at me. “Thought we wouldn’t find out?”

“Find out what?” I ask, trying to get up only to have him place his big hand right on the top of my head. They can’t possibly know about the phone. I was so careful!

Saint steps to Angelo’s left, and Victor joins them on the right. The three of them loom over me, and despite my every attempt to stop it, I start to tremble.

“And here I thought you had a modicum of intelligence,” Victor says mildly. “I’ve changed my mind about what to do to you.”

“I didn’t do anything!” I protest with as much fire as I can muster, trying to sound confident.

Angelo slaps me across the face, sending me reeling. “How’s your sister doing? What about yourUncle Al?”

Fuck.Fuck!

I freeze in place, still looking up at the three of them. My gaze darts between them, trying to find an ally, but even Saint looks hard and cold right now. Angelo’s fury is barely contained, and Victor…

Victor sits down on the bed, his legs right up against my side. “Didn’t you say you would rather be with us than your father? Didn’t you beg Saint to ask me not to send you to Pavone? But I suppose you’re as dishonest as Angelo accused you of being.”

I have no idea what to say. I look up at Victor, swallowing hard. I had done those things, and I had meant them. But…

“Say something, Lucia,” Saint says, and it’s his voice that hurts the most—especially since he’s called me Lucia, notkitten, and it makes me feel so distant from him.

“You’re just a deceitful little whore,” Angelo hisses, tangling his fingers in my hair and forcing my gaze to his.

Somehow, even amidst the fear, I’m getting pissed off too. Did they really think what they’d done wouldn’t affect me? They’d murdered someone I’d cared for in front of me, they’d forced me tolick his blood off of Angelo’s fingersmoments before he’d fucked me and humiliated me.

They’d sent videos to my father of what they’d done to me.
