“You mean like the woman?”

I kept my hard glare on his. Lately, we’d been tolerating each other and nothing more. I’d grown antsy over the last few months, not only because of my information being hacked but also because I’d accepted fewer assignments. That usually didn’t bode well for my temperament. “Get out, Diego. I have better things to do.”

Chuckling, he waved me off then headed toward the door. “What do you want me to tell Mr. Ovachov?”

“Tell him nothing at this point. I want to know who he is first.”

“Got it.”

I waited until he’d left before calling Alexei. Then I planned on shutting down for the night. Business and bullshit could wait. “Is the woman safe?”

He growled before bothering to answer. “I have her in a facility in Connecticut.”

“Her condition?”

“She’s dying.”

“How soon?”

“I didn’t stay for the examination but given her condition, maybe weeks. I heard something disturbing. You have the snitch’s daughter.”

Fuck. The information had already been leaked.

“Yes.” There was no sense in denying it at this point.

“Ty grebanyy mudak!” he snarled.

You fucking asshole.

“Taking her was necessary and she will remain with me for as long as I see fit.”

“I’ve never known you to take a trophy after a kill.”

“You don’t know me at all, Russian,” I told him.

“You’re playing a very dangerous game. She already has a price on her head.”

At least what I’d suspected was confirmed, although I didn’t believe she’d realized just how much danger she was in. “Let me guess, your bid is the highest.”

He laughed. “I am certain you’ll handle her as necessary. You are a cruel man.”

Emily had already been made aware how much I’d learned about her past, yet she’d not begged for her mother’s life. I found that incomprehensible. Her innocence could be just another ploy taught by her father. My pulse increased as I thought about the possibility of deception. If she was playing a game, she would soon regret her decision.

“It is possible various items of importance are in her possession. If that is the case, her value will increase.” I tossed out the carrot in order to buy myself time. Plus, I refused to allow the arrogant bastard to believe he had the upper hand.

“Are you trying to bargain with me?”

“I never bargain, Alexei. You should know that by now. Who is Vasily Ovachov?”

I could tell by his hesitation he seemed surprised. “A worthless skag with no scruples. He’s the kind of asshole who will sell his mother’s soul to increase his wealth.”

“How did he get my name?”

Another hesitation.

“I have no idea.”

I listened to inflections in the Russian’s voice. He was telling me the truth. “Then find out who in your organization opened their goddamn mouth.”
