“What’s happening?”

He laughed bitterly, immediately shutting off the light. “We’re under attack.”

Another setup.

Oh, God. No. Kostya.

“Come on,” he snarled, dragging me further into the interior of the house.

“What are you doing?”

As he shoved me against the wall of the living room, his weapon positioned near my face, the wave of fear coursing through me became paralyzing. And all I could think about was Kostya.

“Attempting to save your life. If you’re a religious woman, you need to start praying ‘cause I doubt this is going to end well.”

The sound of an explosion ripped through the house, debris falling from the ceiling. Within seconds, smoke filled the room.

“I’m getting you to the panic room.” Diego kept his firm hold, shielding my body then forcing me to enter the hallway.

“Not without the flash drive.”

“There’s no time.”

Another explosion rocked the perimeter, the hard crash as items were tossed onto the floor forcing a yelp. “You don’t understand.” As additional smoke filled the room, I struggled with him, issuing a hard punch in order to break his hold. Then I dodged a portion of the ceiling caving in as I raced toward the office. Flames were already crawling up one of the outside walls, the acrid stench making my eyes water.

Shaking uncontrollably, I made it to the desk, my fingers numb as I reached for the drive.

“Emily!” Diego shouted, only a few feet behind me.

I was shocked at the level of smoke, already coughing as the wretched substance filled my lungs. As soon as I shoved the drive into my pocket, the entire house started to shake.

“Fuck!” Diego snarled, lunging toward me.

Just as the room started to cave in. As a scream erupted from my core, I was tossed to the floor, another round of gunfire created a buzzing sound in my ears.

Boom!

CHAPTER17

Kostya

Five minutes earlier

The estate owned by the Volkov family was enshrouded in darkness, not a single fucking light on. While no one had come or gone for several hours, my hackles remained raised. I gave the advance notice, the other soldiers immediately pushing forward.

Everything about this operation yanked at my instinct. My trepidation wasn’t solely based on the odds, which were against us. My gut was telling me this was nothing but a grandstanding effort, nothing more than a show of force.

I waited as the soldiers rushed forward, alarms going off instantly. There’d been no time to try to decipher the security codes. There was also no need. I’d anticipated a show of force and within seconds, the explosive sound of gunfire tore through the night sky.

“Go. Go. Go!” the soldier in charge of the mission shouted. My soldiers crawled out of hiding, climbing and jumping the iron fence surrounding the property. Within seconds, they’d breached the outer perimeter, breaking off in task formation as they surrounded the house.

After five seconds, I refused to wait any longer, racing into the fray, heading directly for the house. As two men lunged from the shadows, I swung my automatic weapon toward them, spraying both with a volley of bullets.

They went down hard, but two more approached, one managing to get off a single shot before I was able to cut them down. The force of the single bullet grazing my shoulder was enough to drive me back by several feet, the wind knocked out of me.

Within seconds, four of my soldiers flanked my side, yanking me to my feet.

“The house. Get inside,” I snarled, allowing them to kick in the door. As I rushed in, several snipers jumped out from shadowed corners, none having quick enough reflexes. After kicking one in the gut, another soldier popped off three rounds in rapid succession.
