“They are adults. Besides, have you looked at them? I don’t think there’s anything that will break these two apart.”

“Is she right?” Dave asks, looking first at me, then at Fiona, who is visibly uncomfortable with the direct question.

“She is,” I say, sitting up, ready to face the music.

“I knew it. How long have you been dating?” Jennifer asks, moving her chair closer to Fiona’s.

“Not long. And we’re keeping it low-key. No PDA at the office or anything. Mum’s the word,” Fiona says, directing her words at Dave.

“I guess this is a done deal, then?” he asks.

“If it’s a problem, I’m happy to resign from the project,” I say, getting up and holding my hand out for Fiona.

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Dave motions for me to sit back down. “I’ve seen the first dailies. You two are doing good work. If it doesn’t create a problem at work, and you two don’t mind keeping this quiet until we wrap, I see no reason to change anything.”

“Great, that’s settled then. Anyone ready for dessert?” Jennifer doesn’t give any of us a chance to answer before dashing off into the kitchen, refusing Fiona’s offer to help.

“You should probably let Cara in on this thing between you two. That woman misses nothing, and I don’t want her spreading rumors.” Dave sits back and eyes the two of us.

I take Fiona’s hand, suppressing the urge to pull her close and kiss her now that the secret is out.

“That’s not a bad idea. Plus, I’m bursting to tell someone.” She squeezes my hand. I’m sure it’s meant to be soothing, but it has the opposite effect.

I’m glad when Jennifer returns with a tray of peach sorbet topped with fresh raspberries. I need the distraction and the cool treat.

“What’s it like working with Anton Kirk?” Jennifer asks while we enjoy the sorbet. “He’s my favorite actor. Dave, you’ll have to introduce us.”

“I don’t think so. You have too much of a crush on the guy. And I have to admit, he’s pretty good-looking.” Dave smiles at his wife, and I have no doubt that she’ll get to meet our male lead.

“He comes prepared. I’ll give him that,” I say.

“I know, right?” Fiona’s eyes light up. “Jennifer, you should see the man in action. He embodies the role completely. He won’t even break character during lunch.”

“I’ve read that he’s a method actor. They say he goes a little overboard sometimes.”

“That he does,” I say with a wry smile.

“I take it you’re still not a fan?” Dave asks.

“He can act, but he isn’t easy to work with,” I admit.

“But it will be worth it in the end. You have to admit, Anton is an amazing actor.” Fiona looks at me, expecting an answer.

“That he is,” I say. I just hope we’ll all survive working with him until this movie is a wrap.

FIONA

I can’t believe how quickly I come to regret coming to Anton’s defense. “Maybe you were right about him,” I tell Joe the next day over dinner.

“What happened now? Please tell me he isn’t still harassing Alice when I’m not around.” Joe has done his best to reign in the method actor who likes to stay in character and “become the role.”

“He knows better than that. No, he started calling me Betsy. I guess he’s substituting me as his love interest since Alice is off-limits. We had to have a chat about appropriate and inappropriate work behavior.”

“Tell me he didn’t touch you. If he—”

“Relax. It was a hug and a shoulder rub. Not pleasant and most definitely unprovoked, but I’ll get over it and I think he got the point.” I shiver, thinking about him all over me, cooing lines from the script into my ear.
