“She gave him a pedicure. Cut those sharp claws and then filed them down. He didn’t like it, but it’s much easier to play with him now.”

“Good, I’m glad. Want me to wait for you until you get the mail?” I ask.

She shakes her head and dashes off. I make my way up to Fiona’s place. Gentle music is playing when she opens the door.

“Hey. I thought you had a meeting.” Her eyes are hooded, and she’s standing in the door.

Across her shoulder, I can see a set table with a blown-out candle sitting in the middle. One set of dishes is on the table. The other one is on the coffee table, with remnants of food scattered across the plate.

“You made dinner?” I ask, surprised. From the looks of it, I missed a romantic evening, complete with candlelight.

“Not exactly. It’s no big deal. If you’re hungry, there’s some food.” She steps back, and I follow her inside.

“Where did this come from?” I ask, staring at the fancy dishes sitting on the counter. There’s an arugula salad with smoked salmon, roasted chicken on a bed of root vegetables, and some sort of fancy-looking mouse dessert that’s still untouched.

Fiona laughs. “I asked Chad, the chef from Rooted, to cook for us. Figured he could use the extra cash since you guys were shooting in the restaurant all afternoon. I’m not sure he’ll see any of the cash we’re paying the owner.”

“That was nice of you. And a sweet surprise. I’m sorry I didn’t make it back in time.” I do my best to suppress a yawn and fail.

“Don’t start that,” she says, yawning herself. It starts a chain reaction that only stops when she turns around, doing her best to hide her yawning.

“It’s been a long week,” I say.

“It’s only Thursday. Want me to fix you a plate?”

“Really?” I shake my head. Time doesn’t follow the usual rules when you’re shooting a movie. It’s racing and crawling at the same time. The days are long, yet there are never quite enough of them to get it all in the can on time and on budget.

“Here. Sit.” She hands me a plate that has a little of everything but the desert on it.

I follow her to the living room. She curls up on the couch and watches me eat while I tell her about my day.

“How about you? Anything exciting happen?” I ask.

“Actually, it sort of did. Gwen called. She talked me into meeting her in Charleston to go dress shopping. I leave on Friday night. Back late Saturday. That gives me all day Sunday to make sure you have what you need for Monday.” We have a few big scenes coming up that are crucial to the film.

“I’d—Nevermind. I’m glad you get to spend time with Gwen.” Even if it meant not getting any time together on the weekend.

“You sure? I can cancel if there’s something urgent you need me to do.”

I shake my head. “Go, have fun. I’ll probably be shut in all weekend, editing some of what we have so far. Samuel is coming in next week, and Dave wants to screen what we have so far.”

“I’m sure they’ll love it.” She squeezes my hand.

“I should go,” I say, entirely too comfortable on her couch.

“You should. We both need some sleep.”

I drag myself down the hall and pass out the moment my head hits the pillow.

“The dress is perfect,” Gwen says the moment I step out of the dressing room of the small boutique in Charleston.

“Are you sure?” I ask, looking at myself in the floor-length mirror

“I’m positive. Besides, I think you’ve tried on every single dress in this place. This one is stunning. Joe’s jaw will drop.” She grins, and I can see that she means it.
