Seriously, if my grandparents look at each other one more time…

Grandpa’s shoulders sag with a heavy sigh. “Let me write down an address so you can get some answers.”

He licks his index finger and takes a sheet of paper from the stack at his side and picks up an old pen. Meanwhile, I look curiously at my grandma. “Why do I get the feeling there’s something big you’re not telling me?”

“It’s just better if you see for yourself.”

LOGAN

“It’s good to see you, Logan. As always, your Papa is so happy when he’s had a visit with you.”

I force a smile as I sign the logbook and avoid the flirtatious stare from the nurse standing to my side.

My mind is reeling. Seeing my dad is usually the only time my brain stops and I can stay present in the moment.

I need this visit more than him.

But then I look up as the reception doors roll back and Josie breezes in. Her hair is flowing and there’s a sunny aura framing her body.

For a second, I think my mind is playing tricks on me. But then her eyes land on mine and her jaw drops.

“What are you doing here?” we say in unison.

Her cheeks redden.

“Sorry,” she says, halting. My gaze dips to her hands; she’s clutching a piece of paper. She stuffs it in her pocket and turns to leave.

Before my brain can wake up, I find myself running after her.

“Hey,” I grab her arm and the touch makes her yelp. I let her go and rake a hand through my hair. “I’m sorry about earlier. I—”

I want to explain that Josie caught me off guard. All these emotions came rushing to the surface and the last thing I wanted to do in front of my ex was cry on the street.

But before I can explain, Josie waves a hand. “Don’t worry about it.”

Her bottom lip is tucked in, and her eyes keep roaming around as though she’s trying to summon the courage to ask me something. She still hasn’t answered my question.

“So, what are you doing here?” I ask again.

She looks at me like I’ve slapped her for a split second, but she recovers herself with a fake smile.

“I’m here to visit someone.”

I cross my arms. “Oh, really? Who?”

Her cheeks dimple and redden even further as her smile grows. “I mean, not someone. People.”

“People, huh?” I lift my brows, wondering how long she’s going to keep up the act this time.

She starts playing with her hair. “I volunteer when I’m in town. You know, it’s nice to give back to the community…”

“What do you do?” I ask, my Spidey senses picking up lies. Her eyes fixate on mine for a second, then they dip to my chest.

“I read.”

“What do you read?”
