Lily burst out laughing. “That sounds like Bec. She usually convinces other people to do what she wants them to. Look at how I was conned into helping her steal Henry.”

Ashton slipped his arm around her shoulders. “I’m glad she did,” he said quietly as they stood watching from a distance.

Lily felt as if they were the only people at the fair. Somehow, she and Ashton had become friends again, and if today was any indication, perhaps it would soon be more. She leaned her head against his shoulder.

“It was a disaster right from the start,” she replied. “But it ended well enough.” She straightened up. “But I still haven’t been out to the farm to help you in the barn yet. When is that going to happen?”

“How about next week?” Ashton asked. “It will give me time to think about how I want it organized.”

“That would work for me if it’s on Tuesday or Thursday. I have work on the other days.”

“Tuesday works well for me,” Ashton said. He drew her closer. “Don’t tell Bec, but it won’t be all work and no play.”

“Oooh, that sounds interesting.” Lily rubbed her cheek against his shoulder. “Care to share what the fun might be?”

Ashton grinned and shook his head. “No. Not telling.”

Lily pouted. “Spoilsport.”

“We wouldn’t want Bec to find out. She already thinks I’m giving you a better deal.”

“Well, you wouldn’t know it,” Lily grinned. “Look at her. She's the queen of the hot dog stand despite all her protests.”

“Tyler can’t keep his eyes off her,” Ashton chuckled. “He’d go to the moon and back if she asked him to.”

“They’d make a cute couple,” Lily decided.

“Enough about my brother and his love life. Or lack thereof,” Ashton said, taking her hand. “Come with me. I think I have an idea you’ll enjoy.”

Fifteen minutes later, they were seated in a Ferris wheel car, waiting for an attendant to set the ride in motion.

“I haven’t been on a Ferris wheel ride since I was a teenager,” Lily said. “I kind of got out of the habit of going to fairs as I got older. I don’t know why, because today has been a lot of fun.”

“I thought you might like this,” Ashton said as the ride began to move. “We can watch the sunset from up high, and we can stay on it for as long as you want. The attendant knows me and he’ll let us go around again.”

Lily grinned. “You know people in high places.”

Ashton chuckled. “Most Ferris wheel attendants never take a ride themselves, you know.”

“Their experience is strictly theoretical then,” Lily countered.

Ashton took her hand. “I’ve missed you, Lil,” he said softly as they rose above the fairground.

Lily looked at him. The golden glow of the sinking sun picked up the red-gold highlights in his brown hair, and his blue eyes were tender as he looked into hers.

“I’ve missed you, too.” She laced her fingers through his. “Let’s not fight again.”

“I can’t believe it was over something so stupid,” he replied. “Hit me on the head with a shovel if I’m that dumb in the future, won’t you? It might knock some sense into me.”

Lily giggled. “Okay. Just don’t send me to jail for assault.”

Ashton chuckled. “I never would’ve sent Bec to jail, you know,” he confided. “Or you. I actually thought it was quite funny.”

“It was you that left the notes from Henry, wasn’t it?” Lily asked.

Ashton’s lips twitched. “Guilty,” he admitted.

“Why didn’t you just come and take him back? Just the fact that you didn’t do anything made me doubt it was you.”
