“I haven’t forgotten the ring,” Ashton said. “But I thought you might like to help me choose.”

“I’d like that,” Lily smiled. “It’s something else we can do together.”

Ashton kissed her temple. “Together. It sounds good, doesn’t it?”

“It sure does,” Lily agreed happily.

“There’s just one other thing,” Ashton said seriously a moment later.

“What’s that?”

“Should we invite Henry to the wedding?”

Lily burst out laughing. “What are you going to do? Dress him up in a tuxedo?”

Ashton grinned mischievously. “Are you sure?”

“Henry is a very lovely pig, but he belongs in the pig pen,” Lily said firmly. “It’s a novel thought, though,” she added with a laugh. “He did bring us together again, after all.”

Ashton chuckled. “You’re right. Henry most definitely belongs with his ladies. I’m looking forward to planning our wedding together. No pigs invited.”

“I can’t wait,” Lily sighed. “Oh, Ashton, I’m so happy I could burst!”

His only answer was a lingering kiss. “I’m looking forward to doing this every day,” he whispered.

Her heart soared. “Me too,” she whispered back.

RINGS ON WINGS

Julie

“Jules? Did you hear me?”

I blink at my friend Dani and finally pull it together enough to nod. I even manage to smile.

“Yeah, Dani!” Of course, I’m excited for Dani and Eric. They’re having a baby. It’s their first. What’s not to be happy about? Dani and I have been friends since kindergarten. Besties! I want Dani to have it all—perfect marriage, wonderful husband, and a baby. A family. She deserves it.

But for just a half a second there, Dani’s news hurts.

Because once upon a time, I thought I was going to have the same thing. Truman Woolff and I were a thing for four years. From the time we were seniors in high school until we graduated from college, Truman and I were inseparable.

And then I got pregnant.

Sure, I was old enough to have sex. Old enough to be responsible for a baby. And I was happy about being pregnant. I read all the books I could find on pregnancy and parenting, and I went back and forth on baby names a hundred times before deciding what to name Ryle.

The only difference between Dani and me is that she and Eric are married.

But when I got pregnant, Truman and I split up.

“I’m so excited for you!” I gush, because that little pin prick of pain has passed, and the six years since then, the six years of me and Ryle make me happy. “When are you due? Do you know what you’re having? Have you told anyone?”

Dani chuckles and stretches her legs out on her lounge chair. Eric is in their house getting burgers ready to put on the grill. Ryle is with Truman’s parents, so I have the evening to myself. Funny how I always think I need a night to myself, but the second I leave Ryle with Truman or anyone in his family, I miss him.
