“Truman?”

“Yeah, Harper, I still love her,” I say as I jump out of the chair like someone lit a fire under my butt. “Do you need anything? Pain pill?”

“Does she know?” Harper totally ignores my attempt to change the subject.

“No.” I shrug, drag my eyes around the room, and eventually meet her gaze. “Doesn’t matter.”

“Of course it matters, Truman!” She plants her hands down on the cushions and uses them to push herself up to sit straighter. “You have a child with her. If you love her, you need to tell her. Neither of you are getting any younger, and neither of you has settled down with anyone else—”

“I’m not even thirty,” I remind her.

“But you’re not happy with what you’re doing,” she argues. “I dunno. Maybe at first, living big and crazy and all the travel and women were your thing.”

“Harper,” I grind her name out through clenched teeth.

“But even if that was the case—”

“It’s not the case,” I snap. “It’s never been the case. I’ve always been in love with Julie, and no matter how I’ve tried to get over her, I can’t.”

“Then tell her.” She shrugs.

I stare at my sister for a moment and finally shake my head. “I’ll be gone for a few—”

“Did you cheat?”

Her soft-spoken question stops me at the doorway. I’m sure it’s what everyone thinks—Truman cheated on Julie, and she broke things off. Still, hearing someone ask, hearing someone who’s supposed to be on my side say those words, cuts through me like a dull blade.

“No.” With my back to her, I huff out a long, tired sigh. “I didn’t, Harp. See ya in a few days.”

“That’s adorable.” Dani clutches my phone in her hand and scrolls through the pictures I took at Ryle’s first ball game. “I hate that I had to miss it.”

“Morning sickness can do that to you.”

“At six in the evening.”

I take my phone back and smile in commiseration. “Everyone’s pregnancy is different, Dani. Don’t beat yourself up over it.”

“When’s his next game?”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Great. I’ll be there.” Dani nods. “I’m glad you talked to Truman about getting Ryle signed up.”

I freeze at the mention of Truman’s name. Eyes locked with Dani’s, I can’t play it off and pretend like it had no effect on me.

“What?” she asks. Her smile fades a bit.

“What?” I take a sip of my tea and shrug nonchalantly, but that only makes her more suspicious.

“What’s going on with you and Truman?”

“Nothing,” I answer truthfully. “He’s out of town.”

“Breaking news.” She rolls her eyes. “But seriously. You had this look on your face.”
