I follow Ryle into his room and wait while he gets comfortable in his bed before I pull his sheet and quilt up over him. At least he still lets me kiss him goodnight. I know a day will come when he won’t want me to do that anymore.

Truman’s standing right where I left him when I go back in the kitchen.

“No shower?” He moves only to fold his arms over his chest.

“Said he’s too tired.”

“He did play hard.” Truman nods.

“He also said you were grouchy.”

I’m teasing him, but the look on his face suggests he takes me seriously.

“Like I said,” he shrugs, “lot on my mind.”

“Truman, I was teasing.”

We lock gazes, and seconds tick away as we stare at each other.

“Look.” I lick my lips and pull out a chair to sit down. Rather than look at Truman, I fold my hands on the table and stare at my short, bare nails. “I don’t know how to say this, so I’m just going to do it fast and get it over with.”

“Say what?”

“I feel like something’s changed between us this summer. And the only thing that’s really different is that you’ve been around more.”

“So, you want me to go back to traveling more?”

“I didn’t say that.” I shake my head at him. “You’re good at that, ya know?”

“Good at what?” He moves away from the counter and sits at the table across from me.

“Reading into everything I say to you.”

“I want to spend more time with Ryle.”

“Okay.”

“But I worry that’ll be a problem for you.”

“When have I ever said I didn’t want you around him?”

“You haven’t, but I still only see him on the weekends. Or weeknights at his games.”

“All you have to do is tell me, Truman.”

“Okay.”

“There’s something else.”

He looks surprised again.

“I feel like part of this is my fault.”

“Part of what?”

“The tension between us.”

“Look, if you’re into Jerad, it’s not my business. You deserve to be happy, Jules.”
