“Uh huh…” he smirked. “I figured it was already decided.”

“I didn’t see where they would split pizza toppings on here.”

“We are compromising. We are getting the Meat Lovers…”

“No, we aren’t. Are we?” Samantha hesitated. “I didn’t think you liked that.”

“I’ve never tried it, so today is full of several firsts – isn’t it?”

“I guess so.”

“Hmm…?“ Toby began – and it was obvious he was goading her.

“What?”

“I was just thinking about all those elusive firsts that might happen on this date between us…” he replied innocently. “Would you look at that? Fried pickles.”

“Another first?”

“Oh, I’ve had them before. They are okay.”

“Well, you seemed awfully interested in them…” she feigned, only to see his face register shock. All the playfulness and flirting between them disappeared in a split second.

“Don’t look now,” Toby uttered suddenly, his voice pained, as he plastered a polite smile on his face.

Samantha looked up to see her aunt and uncle headed this way.

“Oh, noooo…” she hissed, putting the menu up to her face to hide her expression before beaming brightly. “Hey Aunt Glory and Uncle Hunter. What are you doing here?”

“Getting pizza, kiddo,” Hunter grinned. “What else?”

“Oh, I don’t know – spying for my father?” she said casually, beaming and fluttering her eyelashes pointedly.

“Me? Moi?”

“Yeah, you…” Samantha uttered and heard Toby’s choked laughter that he quickly covered with a napkin. “Kinda makes it hard to go on a date when the entire town is parading to the table, asking questions, and now you’re both here suddenly…” she finished sweetly.

“Yeah, we are,” her uncle grinned – and to her abject horror? They sat down in the other two empty seats at the table, joining them on her date with Toby!

“Hello Mr. and Mrs. Petersen,” Toby said calmly, smiling politely, nudging her foot again under the table. “We were just about to ask you to join us.”

“I bet you were, kiddo…” Hunter laughed easily, grinning at his wife, who looked slightly uncomfortable at the situation.

“Aunt Glory and I were talking the other day about your teeth,” Samantha began easily, trying to put her uncle on the defensive so maybe they would get back up and leave them alone. “When are you coming by?”

“Never,” Hunter shrugged, picking up a menu.

“Somehow, I don’t think that is the case.”

“I don’t like needles.”

“I don’t use them unless there’s a cavity,” Samantha replied pointedly.

“Why are we talking about this?” Hunter retorted, frowning, setting the menu back down. “What are you two up to, anyhow?”

“We were about to order dinner.”

“Perfect, then we aren’t interrupting.”
