SEVERAL YEARS EARLIER

The orange glow from her cigarette burns bright in the dark room. The ash hangs off the end, long and threatening. She’s so out of it she doesn’t even know it’s about to fall and burn her.

My stomach twists in anger, the emptiness a well-known feeling, and there is no food in the kitchen to stop the ache. The floor is cold where I’m lying, and hatred for my life burns as bright as the cigarette in my mother’s mouth.

At ten years old, I know more about the world than most adults. My bastard of a father saw to that education. His refusal to claim me as his own spurned a darkness so deep inside me there’s only one thing I can do. Revenge.

One day, he will learn the consequences of discarding me like trash.

Tonight, it’s my mother’s turn.

I light the match in my hand, gently setting it on the disgusting carpet under me. The flame ignites, burning everything in its path. I slowly walk away from the blaze, a smile stretching across my face as the embers glow brightly in the darkened room.

Yes, I will be the one to teach those consequences, and I will enjoy every minute of it.
