Page 101 of Breathing Her Fire

I pull into my garage and head upstairs quickly. I don’t want to be gone for too long and not be there when Natalie wakes up again. I don’t know how I’m going to tell her this is all my fault. My stomach twists at the thought. I should’ve been more careful with her and took better precautions to keep her safe.

After showering, I throw on some clothes and gather up a few things Natalie may want now that she’s awake. The doctors will want her to stay for a while longer to make sure she’s okay.

I’m distracted by my thoughts when movement catches my eye. I look up to see Kyle, one of our on-call guys, standing in the doorway of my bedroom.

“What the fuck are you doing in here?” I ask in surprise.

“Hey, big bro.” My brows furrow at his words. Suddenly, he’s pointing a gun at me, and I freeze where I am.

“Have a seat.” He gestures to a chair in my bedroom with the gun. I slowly walk over to it and sit down. My eyes dart around the room to see if I have anything I can use to defend myself, but there’s nothing in reach.

He walks closer to me, and for the first time, I really look at Kyle. His dark hair and eyes match mine. Despite being physically smaller than me, our resemblances are hard to miss. I don’t know how I didn’t see it before.

He keeps the gun pointed at me as he attaches cuffs to my wrists and pulls my hands behind me to secure them to the rungs of the chair.

I don’t know what’s going on or how I’m going to get out of this mess, but what I do know is I will do whatever it takes to get back to Natalie.
