Page 3 of Breathing Her Fire

“Oh, lovely.” Sarcasm rings through my voice. “What do we do now, Fireman Dan?”

Tucker laughs. “Do you have cell service?”

“Nope, you?”

After glancing at his phone, he shakes his head no and strides over to the elevator panel, pushing the button to call out to whoever is going to get us help.

“Star Services, how can I help you?” A scratchy voice comes over the intercom. It sounds like this lady has been smoking a pack a day since she was legal.

“We’re stuck in the elevator of the Sonoma Town Hall building, and neither of us has cell service.”

“Okay, is anyone hurt or in need of emergency help?”

“Uh, no, we’re both fine.”

“We’ll call the local fire department and have someone come get you as soon as we can.”

“Okay, thanks,” Tucker says, and we hear the click of the intercom before he even finishes his sentence.

“What do you want to bet, she’s going to go take a smoke break first, and then she’ll call the fire department?” I ask him.

He snorts. “Yeah, I’m not taking that bet. Looks like we’re stuck here.”

I sigh and lean back against the railing. I’m stuck in this little prison with the hottest man on the planet and pretending I’m not hot and bothered. My life is not fair sometimes.
