Page 56 of Breathing Her Fire

The sound of the intercom blaring rouses me from sleep. I was having a fantastic dream about a very naked Natalie, and now my cock is harder than stone.

“Engine 15, Truck 20, Ambo 6, structure fire at 1138 North Cherry Street.”

The call has my hard-on deflating in seconds as I throw on my T-shirt, pants, and shoes before rushing out to the engine bay. Another structure fire in just a few weeks is very weird, and my gut is telling me this is going to be a big one.

The guys load up quickly, and we’re headed off. It’s around two in the morning right now, but with the adrenaline pumping, my guys are all alert and ready. It’s weird how quickly your body reacts to situations like this. There will be times where I’m off shift and I’ll just randomly wake up at three AM, ready for the day.

Daniel pulls up to a two-story building completely engulfed in flames. The night sky is so bright with oranges and reds it’s as if it’s daytime out here.

“Oh, fuck, this is bad,” Sam says from behind me.

He’s not wrong. The fire is already huge, and it’s going to take a massive effort to ensure it doesn’t spread to the buildings around it. I can tell right now the building will be a total loss when we’re done here.

We jump out of the truck and immediately get to work.

Truck 20 pulls up while we’re unloading, as well as our paid on-call guys. I see the chief’s SUV pull in behind the trucks, and I know everyone is on edge for this fire.

“Brody, Sam, and Rick, you guys are with me on the search. Charlie and Rodney, get with the others and start putting out the flames. It’s going to be a long one, so make sure you’re checking your O2 levels. Don’t make any rash choices.”

I see Chief James walking towards us, so I hold off on giving the OK to head inside.

“Tucker, I just talked to the manager of the building. This is a group home for foster kids, and there are still five people inside, two adults and three kids. They’re trapped on the second floor because the fire has burned through the stairs already.”

“Got it. Let's set up a ladder rescue. Brody, you're up as ladder engineer. Show off your brand new certification. Sam and Rick, you’re with me on rescue.”

Everyone gets to their spots as Brody begins placing the ladder on the west side of the building, away from the fire.

Sam, Rick, and I are waiting at the bottom of the ladder in order to quickly make it up to the window once it’s in place.

“Ladder in place, you’re a go,” Brody says over the radio.

“Copy that. Going up.”

I start climbing with Sam behind me. Rick and Brody will follow behind us once we’re at the top.

I get to the glass and tap it a few times, yelling for anyone inside to stand back in case there are people by the window. I break the glass and scrape the sides so no one will get cut and then step into the building. Smoke blankets the room, and I can already feel the heat bubbling up from the floor.

Sam and I start towards the open door, and we both turn left, walking towards the end to start clearing rooms. “Brody and Rick, start on the right side from the open doorway, left side is covered.”

“Copy that, Captain,” they say in unison.

Sam and I open doors while calling out to anyone who may be inside the rooms. Bedrooms take the longest because there are several places people could be. It’s a slow process to make sure we’ve searched everywhere.

“Check in,” Chief calls in my ear.

“No one so far,” I reply, and the others reply the same.

“Flames are moving quickly, so get a move-on.”

“Copy, Chief.”

This building is huge, and the smoke is getting thicker the longer we’re in here, making visibility minimal.

“I’ve got someone,” Brody says over the comms. “Adult female and one child. Both are responsive.”

“Ambo’s ready,” Chief says.
