We’ve got dinner with Ben’s parents tonight, and I’d love to have the rest of the afternoon to spend on the couch, snuggling with my dude. For as hard and prickly as he can be, the man is a world-class snuggler.

“I’m thinking either a Batman marathon until dinner or Captain America. I’ll let you pick,” I say to Ben as he pulls my car into the driveway.

“Batman because at least Christian Bale’s face is covered for a good portion of the movie.”

“Why does his face being covered make the movie better?”

“Because then I don’t have to see you panting after him the whole time.”

“But you look a little like Chris Evans, so it would be like I’m panting after you.” I wink at him before racing up the steps, anticipating the moment he reacts.

I’m grabbed around the waist and lifted into the air before I can make it to the door.

“How about I just make you pant right now?” Ben growls in my ear.

The dogs circle us, impatiently waiting for me to unlock the door.

I push my ass back into Ben’s thickening erection, hoping to push him.

“That’s how you want to play this, huh?” He bites my ear lobe, then steps away from me completely. “Open the door, Sara.”

I stifle my protest while also wanting to melt at the heat in his tone. I flip the deadbolt, letting the dogs race ahead. I turn to Ben, waiting for the rest of my instructions. It’s the most freeing experience to give up my control to him. To feel safe enough to know every move he makes will be for my benefit first.

“Go to the bedroom, take everything off except for your panties, and lie on the bed, face up.”

I nod. “Yes, sir.” For once, I don’t mean it sarcastically. I turn to walk into my bedroom, my shirt clearing my head before I even make it through the threshold. I chuck it to the floor, then freeze. All the clothes I had lying on the floor are now in the laundry basket, my dresser drawers that are usually askew are neatly shut, and there’s a note sitting on top of my bed.

“Ben, did you clean my room?” It’s the only logical explanation. Entertaining anything else is preposterous.

“What?” His voice comes up behind me, his hands skimming down my sides. “Why aren’t you following directions?” he asks into my neck.

“Ben, did you clean my room?”

I’m not sure if it’s my tone of voice or something else, but he drops his hands from my body and steps up next to me. “No, it wasn’t this clean before we left for the park, was it?”

He walks further into the room before he sees the note on my comforter.

“Wait, don’t touch it.”

Ben’s arm freezes mid-air before retracting it back to his side. Pulling my T-shirt back over my head, I dig out some winter gloves from my closet.

Carefully, I open the folded piece of paper, my hands shaking as I read the words printed in the same handwriting as the others.

I’m sorry I’ve neglected you. I’m back now, and we’ll be together soon. Wait for me. Love, G.

“Who the fuck is ‘G’?” Ben asks, his voice hard and angry.

“I don’t know. I’ve received a few other notes from this person, but never like this, never in my bedroom. Ben—” Chaos tears through my body as the implication of what happened floods my brain.

Someone broke into my house, cleaned my room, and left me a love note. The same person who has been leaving me notes and gifts over the past few months.

And if I had to guess…the same person who tried to abduct me.

Ben’s eyes are hard. “We need to call Cooper.Now.”

Redand blue lights reflect off the side of my house, flashing brightly in the waning afternoon sunshine. The dogs are leashed and attached to the patio chair I’m sitting in, and I’m so zoned out, I don’t even notice when Cooper comes to sit by me.
