Now, we’re about to get married in our backyard with our best friends and family holding beers and their kids running around like banshees, all while our dogs chase butterflies, dodging the high-top tables set up under the canopy.

It couldn’t be more perfect.

“Is she okay?” I ask Adam as we walk under the tent where Cooper is standing, waiting to marry us. We didn’t want some random pastor that barely knew us to officiate our wedding, so we asked Cooper if he would be willing to do it instead.

“She’s beautiful.” Adam’s voice catches, emotion written all over his face. Fuck, I’m going to cry just looking at him. There’s no way I’ll be able to keep my composure when Sara gets here.

Sara

“One more pin andyou’re ready,” Megan says, shoving another bobby pin into the bun at the back of my head. Once it’s secured, she squeezes my shoulders. “Beautiful.”

I smile at her through the mirror, beyond grateful for her lifelong friendship. After all of these years of doing each other’s hair, I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it for me. And in all honesty, my attempt to do it myself was pathetic.

“Okay, Cinderella, it’s time to get your happily ever after.” Natalie pulls me out of my chair, not giving me a second to take a breath.

I squeeze her hand, pulling her to a stop. All of my best friends are in my bedroom, helping me get ready, and all the emotions I’ve been feeling start bubbling to the surface.

“I am the luckiest woman in the whole world to have you girls as my best friends.” I look at Lucy, Megan, and Natalie, the three of them standing together in their adorable sundresses. “I wouldn’t be me without you three, and I am so grateful to have found such loyal friends from the very beginning.” I hold my hand out to Quinn and Hope, beckoning them closer. “And you two. It’s as if you’ve both been a part of the group the whole time. We got so lucky when you came into our lives and accepted us as we are. I love you guys.”

“Bitch,” Natalie whispers, swiping the tears from under her eyes. We all bust out laughing, sniffling as we try to contain our emotions. A group hug ensues because we can’t help ourselves, giggling as we love on each other. This is why they are my best friends.

“Come on, ladies. It’s time to get going,” Adam hollers from outside the door, interrupting our moment.

The girls all throw their shoulders back and head out of the bedroom. I hear Natalie tell Adam to come say hello, and a minute later, he’s standing in the doorway, an awestruck expression frozen on his face. His eyes take in my sleeveless, satin, mermaid-style gown, tears welling as his emotions get the better of him. He clears his throat and wipes his mouth as he tries to get himself under control.

“You look beautiful, sis.” He walks toward me, and I meet him halfway, wrapping my arms around his waist.

“Thanks,” I whisper into his chest, overcome with happiness.

Adam clears his throat again before pulling away. “I’m going to go get your groom. Then I’ll send Dad up when we’re ready for you to come down.”

I nod my head, smiling at him. It’s still a little hard to believe that Ben and I are finally getting married. It felt like this day would never come, and now that it’s here, it doesn’t quite feel real.

But I get to marry the love of my life today, and that’s as real life as it gets. To be able to choose the one person I want by my side through all of life’s ups and downs is the most human part of our existence. It’s beautiful.

A few minutes later, Dad comes bounding up the stairs, grinning from ear to ear. He and Mom stuck around for the majority of the morning, getting a sneaky first look at my dress before the girls came up to fix my sad attempt at doing my own hair and makeup. “It’s time, baby girl. Are you ready?”

“Beyond ready.” I grin. He leads me down the stairs and toward the backyard, where everyone is gathered. I immediately find Ben through the windows, looking devastatingly handsome in his navy blue suit.

Dad opens the back door for me, then holds out his arm to escort me the rest of the way. My gaze locks onto Ben as he starts to get choked up, his eyes welling and his smile as bright as the afternoon sun. Naturally, my eyes tear up in response, and the rest of the walk is blurry as I try to fight them back.

Ben takes my hand in his, kissing the back of it as he pulls me in close. He swipes under my eyes, helping to clear the remaining tears. “You look gorgeous. I can’t believe you’re mine.”

“Believe it, baby. My heart is yours.” I smile at him.

“Just as mine is yours. Forever.”
