It was better, in fact, but I didn’t tell him that. We’d been spending too much time together anyway, and although part of me was enjoying the fact we were doing things like running together and ordering takeaways, the kind of stuff I hadn’t done with another person for over a year now, I knew it wasn’t because he had any particular feelings for me; he’d alluded to dating a couple of women at home in New York, and I was clearly nothing more to him than a London-based distraction. It would be easier all round when he was back in the States and I could resume my usual, solitary existence.

I watched him swipe his tea off the table and go over to the window. He said it reminded him of home, the fact that you could see right into other people’s apartments.

‘Amanda’s upped her game,’ he commented.

This was strange. He’d never spoken about her before, or anyone else at work, for that matter.

‘In what way?’ I asked him.

It was just like her to actually start doing some work when the promotion was around the corner. She was the sort of person to swan in, do a great job for about five minutes and swipe the promotion I’d been working steadily towards for the last couple of years out from under my nose. I pushed down the part of me that said maybe that would be a good thing. That maybe then I’d be forced to do something different and wouldn’t actually have to make the decision myself.

Tyler looked around. ‘I mean, she’s good, right? She’s not afraid to say what she wants. Her ideas are on point.’

I put my hair into a bun, fumbling with the band. ‘Sure. She knows what she’s doing.’

Amanda brought out the worst in me, which wasn’t really fair because she actually hadn’t done anything except be her (albeit annoying) self. That and the fact she was one of those girls who always seemed to fall on her feet. I’d always felt a bit resentful towards people like that, who had seemingly cruised through life.

‘Are you going in the shower first or shall I?’ asked Tyler, coming over and kissing me lightly on the top of my head. I hooked my hand around his neck, pulling him in for a proper kiss.

‘I will,’ I said, jumping up and grabbing the empty plates and mugs that were scattered around the room, still a little confused about why he’d brought Amanda up. ‘Ready to leave for work in thirty minutes?’

‘Sure,’ replied Tyler, flopping on the sofa and putting his bare feet up on the coffee table.

I bit my lip, resisting the urge to ask him to take them right back off again. After all, he was going back to America soon and I’d have the place to myself, which was just as I liked it.
