‘So you don’t mind, then?’ I asked, surprised.

‘Nope,’ she said, looking up at me. She was at least a foot shorter than I was. ‘Do you know how many hours us student doctors have to work?’

‘So you don’t have time for relationships either, is that what you’re saying?’

‘Yes, Jack, that’s exactly what I’m saying.’

‘Phew,’ I said, laughing lightly, relieved.

She reached for my hand and squeezed it. ‘You’re a strange one, aren’t you?’

I decided she meant strange in a nice way and took it as a compliment.
