I finished my beer. It went down the wrong way and I coughed and spluttered for a bit, holding my phone away from me.

‘Sorry,’ I said eventually, coming back on the line. ‘What exactly are you worried about?’

‘I can’t see how you’re ever going to be happy if you don’t let people in.’

‘I let people in!’ I protested.

‘Like who?’

‘Well what are we doing now? I’m being honest with you, aren’t I?’

‘To a point,’ said Luke.

I heard voices. Luke told someone he’d be there in a second.

‘Damn, do you have to go?’ I asked sarcastically.

‘Some dodgy-looking blokes have just walked in, apparently, so yeah, you’re off the hook. But I mean it, Jack. Something’s got to give.’

‘Lecture over?’ I said.

‘Lecture over.’

‘Great. I’ll see you tomorrow,’ I replied.

Who’d made up this rule that you had to get married and have kids, anyway? Why? Lots of people didn’t. Look at Clive downstairs, he seemed happy enough and as far as I knew he’d been single all his life. And I would have used George Clooney as an example, but he’d gone and ruined it for single blokes everywhere by marrying Amal and having twins. Twins!

‘Oh, and thank Donna for the invite,’ I said, hanging up.

I picked up the remote, deciding that an episode of Ozark might suit my mood. But I couldn’t relax because Luke’s words kept buzzing around in my head. Were people really that concerned about me? I seriously needed to get an acting job and fast – not only would it sort out all my money problems, but it would get everyone off my back. After all, how could I possibly commit to a relationship when I was busy with work and zipping around the globe to shoot Oscar-winning movies in exotic locations? That, people would understand, I was sure of it.
