‘The life of a superstar agent, eh?’ said Alistair.

I nodded, taking another furtive look around. Chad was now schmoozing with some guy in a suit. I didn’t trust him anymore, I realised. I wasn’t convinced he wanted the best for me and, honestly, I didn’t know why he hadn’t dumped me by now.

‘Obviously it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to poach Star Management’s actors at their own party,’ continued Alistair. ‘But if you ever feel like a change, you know where I am.’

I swept my eyes around the bar, glad to see that Seb was still otherwise engaged on the dance floor. I didn’t want him putting two and two together and gossiping about it.

‘It’s definitely something I’m thinking about,’ I said, lowering my voice. Just saying it out loud made me feel more powerful than I had in years. My future didn’t have to hinge on Chad and whether or not he deemed me important enough to find work for. Alistair was here and he thought I was good enough. I still had it. I was talented and I hadn’t been deluding myself all these years.

Alistair surreptitiously gave me his card and I said I’d drop him a line.

All night I had a sort of excitement buzzing around inside me. It felt good to take control of my own future and for someone to believe in me. Oddly, when I was thinking about what I should do and who I could talk to about it, who might understand, my mind immediately went to Rebecca.
