I bit my lip. ‘I’ve applied for something, actually. It’s still a marketing role, but at a charity working with children who have been bereaved.’

Jack nodded enthusiastically ‘Sounds great. Is that something you’ve always wanted to do? Because of what happened to you?’

‘It is,’ I replied. ‘But I was too scared for a long time. In case it was too painful, or something, which I suppose is a bit selfish. I mean, if I can help other children like me, I should, right?’

Jack thought about it. ‘I don’t think there’s a “should”. You have to do what feels right for you.’

I smiled. ‘Hard to know, though, isn’t it?’

‘Don’t get me started,’ he said, smiling back.

I put my hand on the door handle. ‘Thanks for sorting the lift,’ I said.

‘Any time,’ he replied, grinning. ‘It’s one way for me to make up for all those packages coming your way.’

I rolled my eyes. ‘Yes, well,’ I said, pretending I minded. Now I’d got to know him a bit, I didn’t so much. You could hardly do normal working hours when you were an actor, could you?

I closed my door and leaned my back against it, thinking about his eyes for some reason. How they’d lit up when he was telling me about his part in Romeo and Juliet. About the tops of his arms, his pale wrists. And then I shook myself out of it and started unpacking my dinner. There was no way I could afford to get close to someone again, no matter how easy they were to talk to.
