“No, but I missed you so much that I had to come and see you. You look so beautiful in your dresses,” Bee said.

“Thank you. Ms. Cam helped us pick them out for church with grandma,” Fee explained.

“Well, Ms. Cam did a great job. Thank you, Cam,” Bee said.

“It’s my pleasure,” Cam smiled.

“Okay, so it’s late, and you both need to get to bed. I have to talk details with your daddy, but we will spend a day together while I am here so you can fill me in on all your summer plans,” Bee said.

“Okay, oh, and we have to tell you about the slumber party we went to and the dance class that we’re in,” Fee said.

“I can’t wait to hear all about it,” Bee smiled. “Let me help you back into the truck, so I can talk to your daddy, okay?”

“You promise, Mommy?” Skye asked.

“I promise, promise,” Bee responded.

She walked the girls back to the truck and kissed them both before closing the door.

“Don’t pop up over her again, Bee. You know the rule, call first.”

“I should be able to see my girls anytime I want to Morris,” Bee returned.

“I’m not about to argue with you. I gave you the ground rules. If you don’t follow them, you won’t see them.”

“Beatrice, Morris, I’m new to this, and if I have to referee, I will, but I really shouldn’t have to. Let’s just call it a night. Bee, can you call or text him tomorrow with your plans for the girls? Morris, can you respond to her text, please?” Cam said.

“Yes, I can do that,” Bee said.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Thank you. Goodnight, Beatrice,” Cam said.

“Goodnight,” Bee responded.

Cam

“You coming over?” Morris said after we reached our floor.

“Yes, I’m going to change and then come over.”

“Good night, ladies,” I smiled as I hugged and kissed each girl.

I went into my place and finally kicked off the heels that I should’ve taken off hours ago. My feet went from throbbing to numbness. They looked good, but they hurt like hell.

I chuckled to myself as I undressed thinking about Le’ whatever her name was. Her name should’ve been Le’Ghetto because that’s what she was. She looked like a scene straight out ofBAPSbefore they got a little class—long hot pink nails, an open face gold tooth right in the front of her mouth, and a cheap green wig. It was funny how much crap she was talking, not knowing how close to getting dragged she really was. I knew that I’d matured because the old Cam wouldn’t have warned anyone. I would’ve had that girl on the concrete before anyone would’ve been able to stop me. I learned over the years that the chicks that talked the most were the ones who usually couldn’t fight. Some would surprise you, but usually, while they were talking about what they were about to do, I’d go ahead and get the party started. I hated posturing. Posturing was a tactic people used when they really didn’t want to fight. They wanted to talk until someone came along that would stop it. Not me, I wanted to inflict maximum damage before someone arrived to stop me.

As soon as the thought crossed my mind to whoop Le’Ghetto’s ass, I thought about the girls. I thought about what example I wanted to set for them as the woman in their dad’s life. I didn’t want to take their mother’s place, but I wanted to be a motherly example of what’s right. Especially if Morris and I were going to be together for the long haul, as Karleen had put it.

I was just glad that Beatrice had more sense than her sister. I didn’t know if I’d hesitate to put her on her ass for all the craziness she’d put Morris and girls through.

“Good job, Cambria,” I said out loud.

I was genuinely proud of myself.

After my shower, I changed into my pajamas and slippers, grabbed my cell phone, and headed across the hall to Morris’ place.

The lights were low and music was playing softly through the speakers mounted on his wall when I entered his apartment.
