“I’m going to bed now, good night,” I said and turned to go back to my apartment.

“Aye,” he started.

“Yes?”

“The reason you turned down my dinner offers with me and the girls before is because you felt like it was family time?”

I shifted my weight from one leg to the other before I replied, “Partially. One of the first homes I was in the family had their own biological kids and two fosters. They would make special plans just to spend with their kids. Me and the other foster were never invited to their family time. I know how important that special time is to a family.”

“That’s not the case with me. You are always welcome when the girls and I are together. What’s the other part?”

“Angel,” I replied honestly.

“Angel?” he responded with furrowed brows.

“Isn’t she your girlfriend?”

“I mean,” he shrugged. “It’s a little strained. What does she have to do with anything?”

“If I had a guy, I wouldn’t want him hanging out with his neighbor who happened to be a single female. Who he happened to have…you know. I would figure it would cause some tension in the relationship.”

“After you ghosted me…”

“I didn’t ghost you, Morris.”

“Yeah, you ghosted me, Cam. I’m a grown man. I can handle rejection.”

“It wasn’t ghosting or rejection; it’s just…”

“Call it what you want, but after the shift in our relationship, you said you wanted to be friends.”

“I do want to be friends.”

“Cool, so friends can have dinner together. Friends can hang out and shoot the shit, right?”

“I guess so.”

The truth was I craved Morris like I craved chocolate when Aunt Flo was in town. It was a feeling that I’d tried to suppress, but it was impossible. If he wanted to hang out as friends, then I wasn’t going to try to stop it. I enjoyed being around him and enjoyed the girls. I could be his friend and still respect his relationship.

“So if I asked you to come and hang out with us again, what would you say?”

I shrugged, “Depends…but that shouldn’t stop you from asking.”

“Bet,” he chuckled. “Good night.”

“Good night,” I said and turned to go back to my apartment.

“Those are some nice house shoes,” Morris called behind me.

I looked down at my pink flamingo head slippers.

“Thanks,” I smiled as I closed my front door.

Morris

I closed the door to my place after I was sure Cam was back in her apartment safely. I walked back to my room after stopping at the girls’ room to make sure they were at least in the bed. To my surprise, they were both already asleep. I’d sent them to take a bath as soon as we got home.

I gave Cam two hundred dollars because I went on her website and saw her prices. She didn’t charge me the full amount. While I appreciated her giving me a discount, I didn’t want to pay her less than what she would’ve charged anyone else. The way my girls smiled after she finished their hair was worth way more than what I gave her.
