“They are with their mother. I had a meeting tonight, so they spent some time with her.”

I stood behind her as she entered the code on her door. I followed her in and placed her bags on her kitchen counter.

“Today, Anna, who is the receptionist for the senior associates, brought me a cup of coffee. She prepares coffee every day. I took a sip of the coffee and almost spit it out. I’m glad she wasn’t standing in front of me when I did it. I don’t know how I’ve survived on that crap all this time.”

“I know, once you taste real coffee, that other stuff tastes like brown water, right?” Cam said.

“Exactly, I don’t have to suffer through that crap any…”

I paused my sentence after I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I didn’t recognize the number, but it was my personal cell, and I didn’t give my number out to just anyone.

“Hello?”

“Daddy?”

“Skye? Whose phone are you calling me from?”

“Umm, it’s Tez’s phone.”

“Who the hell is Tez?” I yelled.

“Aye mane, this is Tez,” the unfamiliar male voice started. “Tony and Bee left yo’ shawties here at the house while they made a run. I got shawties of my own and didn’t think that shit was right, so I told them to call you.”

I’d never felt the level of rage that coursed through my body. I could feel the heat rising from my stomach to my ears. The sound of my own heartbeat forced me to press the phone closer to my ear to hear. The thoughts of my babies being touched, beaten, hurt, or scared caused an immediate headache.

“Are they okay?” I asked as I rubbed my temple in an attempt to alleviate the pain.

I pressed the phone into my ear, trying to hear background noises. I almost expected to hear one or both of them crying.

“I got them right now, but this ain’t no place for kids, mane. The address is 1254 Cabanne,” Tez said.

“Can I speak back to my daughter?” I asked.

“Daddy?” Skye said.

“Where is Fee?”

“She’s right here,” Skye answered.

“Alright. Stay together. Do you hear me? She doesn’t move without you, and you don’t move without her.”

“Yes, sir,” Skye said.

“I’m on my way to get you. Are you both okay?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I will be there soon. Give the phone back to Tez.”

“What up?” Tez said.

“I will be there in about twenty minutes.”

“Aight,” he responded before disconnecting the call.

“What happened?” Cam said after I tucked my phone back in my pocket.

“Bee left my girls somewhere on the north side,” I said as I rushed to Cam’s front door. “I gotta grab something from my house and go and get them.”
