I looked at Morris and then at the noddle. I shook off the nervousness, tented my hands in front of me, and pushed off from the wall. My legs and arms moved in concert until I saw that full beard in front of me. After swimming close enough, I reached out and grabbed the noddle.

All of the kids in the class cheered for me. Morris smiled. I was proud.

“You did great today,” Morris said after all of the children left the pool area.

“I had fun today. I honestly didn’t think that I would ever learn to swim.”

“Well, you have. You have to keep practicing, but you are a great student.”

“I have a great instructor,” I returned.

“Yeah, you do,” Morris smiled.

My phone rang, and the caller ID showed it was fromThe Henrene Academy. Knowing that Morris’ girls attended that school, my brain went down a dark rabbit hole extremely fast. Why are they calling me? I didn’t tell Morris to put me down as an emergency contact, although I wouldn’t be mad if he did. Ohmigawd, I hope nothing is wrong with the girls. They wouldn’t know to call me unless the secretary couldn’t get in touch with Morris, and then they called Sallie, who told them to call me because Morris and I are friends and neighbors…

All of that passed through my brain before I nervously connected the call.

“Hello?” I said after connecting the call to my Bluetooth system.

“Ms. Cam, this is Skye.”

“Skye, what’s wrong?” I quickly returned.

My stomach dropped as I quickly pulled out of traffic onto a parking lot and turned the volume up so I could hear her clearly. Several horrific scenarios ran through my mind before she responded.

“It’sMuffins with Momstoday, and our mommy isn’t coming. Can you come to our school and have muffins with me and Fee?” Skye asked.

Muffins with Moms! Right! Their mother told them she would be in town for their school event. I was surprised that she didn’t show up for it.

“What time does it start?” I asked, looking at the clock on my dashboard. I was out running a few errands before my first client. My start time was a little later than usual because my first client of the day had canceled, giving me time to get a few things accomplished.

“Ms. Patrick, what time doMuffins with Momsstart?” I heard her ask someone. “Ms. Patrick said all the moms will be here by nine-fifteen.”

I had a little over thirty minutes to get to them.

“Okay, I will send your dad a text and ask him if it’s okay. Once I hear back from him, I will be on my way.”

“Okay,” Skye said.

“See you in a few minutes, okay?”

“Okay, Ms. Cam, bye,” she said before disconnecting the call.

I typed out a quick text to Morris. I didn’t think it was appropriate to do anything with his girls without his knowledge. I waited for his response while I planned out the rest of my morning in my head.

If I was going to go to their school, then I wouldn’t be able to get to the errands I had for the day. I needed to see if someone was available to take care of my beauty supply run, it was the one thing I had to do today that could not be postponed.

“Hey, Nuri,” I said once the call connected.

“Hey Cam, what’s up?” Nuri responded.

“I need a few things from the beauty supply. Please tell me that you’re going today before work?” I pleaded.

“As a matter of fact, I am. What do you need?”

“I will send you the list and CashApp you the money. Is that okay?”
